Bachelier, Nicholas

, of Tholonse, but originally of Lucca, studied sculpture and architecture at Rome under Michael Angelo. On returning to his native country, he introduced a true taste in those arts, instead of the barbarous manner which had till then prevailed. His works in sculpture that still subsist in several churches of that city, always excite admiration, though some of them have since been gilt, which has deprived them of that grace and delicacy which Bachelier had given them. He was still exercising his art in 1553. 3
