BOMBARD

, an ancient piece of ordnance, now out of use. It was very short and thick, with a large mouth; some of which it is said threw balls of 300 pounds weight, requiring the use of cranes to load them. The Bombard is by some called basilisk, and by the Dutch donderbus.

To BOMBARD, is to attack by throwing of bombs, or shells.
