CHEVRETTE

, in Artillery, an engine to raise guns or mortars into their carriage. It is formed of two pieces of wood of about 4 feet long, standing upright upon a third, which is square. The uprights are about a foot asunder, and pierced with holes exactly opposite to one another, to receive a bolt of iron, which is put in either higher or lower at pleasure, to serve as a support to a handspike by which the gun is raised up.
