DIONYSIUS

, the Periegetic, an ancient geographer and poet. Pliny says, he was a native of the Persian Alexandria, afterwards called Antioch, and at last Charrax; that he was sent by Augustus, to survey the eastern part of the world. Dionysius wrote a great number of pieces, enumerated by Suidas and his commentator Eustathius: but his Periegesis, or Survey of the World, is the only one now extant; which may be well esteemed one of the most exact systems of ancient geography, since Pliny himself proposed it as his pattern.
