EMBOLUS

, the moveable part of a pump or syringe; called also the piston, and popularly the sucker. The pipe or barrel of a syringe, &c, being close shut, the embolus cannot be drawn up without a very considerable force; which force being withdrawn, the embolus returns again with violence; owing to the greater pressure of air above than below it.
