LEUWENHOEK (Antony)

, a celebrated Dutch philosopher, was born at Delft in 1632; and acquired a great reputation throughout all Europe, by his experiments and discoveries in Natural History, by means of the microscope. He particularly excelled in making glasses for microscopes and spectacles; and he was a member of most of the literary societies of Europe; to whom he sent many memoirs. Those in the Philosophical Transactions, and in the Paris Memoirs, extend through many volumes; the former were extracted, and published at Leyden, in 1722. He died in 1723, at 91 years of age.
