MANTLE

, or Mantle-tree, is the lower part of the breast or front of a chimney. It was formerly a piece of timber that lay across the jambs, supporting the breastwork; but by a late act of parliament, chimney-breasts are not to be supported by a wooden mantletree, or turning piece, but by an iron bar, or by an arch of brick or stone.
