OCCULTATION

, the obscuration, or hiding from our sight, any star or planet, by the interposition of the body of the moon, or of some other planet.—The Occultation of a star by the moon, if observed in a place whose latitude and longitude are well determined, may be applied to the correction of the lunar tables; but if observed in a place whose latitude only is well known, may be applied to the determining the longitude of the place.
