PEDIMENT

, in Architecture, a kind of low pinnacle; serving to crown porticos, or finish a frontispiece; and placed as an ornament over gates, doors, windows, niches, altars, &c; being usually of a triangular form, but sometimes an arch of a circle. Its height is various, but it is thought most beautiful when the height is one fifth of the length of its base.
