Hypocrisy

.—Hypocrisy of humanity, is the most odious of all hypocrisies. Can we behold without horror, a man who condemns a war, as iniquitous and unjust, take upon him the command of an expedition, diabolically criminal, the object of which was to arm citizen against citizen, and the child against his parent. When the executioner lifts his murderous arm against his fellow creature, he is the instrument of the law. But what name can be applied to the merit of the unprincipled military savage, who has taken up arms in a cause which he admits and acknowledges to be unjust!*
