Negro

,—a black beast of the mammalia class, with flat nose, thick lips, woolly head, and ivory teeth, and with a face somewhat resembling the human. He is a biped, but clearly not a human being, as he is neither a Christian, nor can he talk English. This animal is very useful in our settlements in the West Indies, and admirably supplies the place of horses, asses, mules, and oxen, in cultivating the produce of those inclement islands. The flesh of their young is very white and tender when fricaseed, which the planters in general prefer, for delicacy of flavor, to that of the adults, which is rather tough and fibrous, from excess of labor and coarse diet.
