Vernet, Claude, French marine-painter, born at Avignon; executed more than 200 paintings, both landscape and sea pieces (1712-1789). Carlo, son of preceding, painter of battle-pieces, born at Bordeaux (1768-1833). Horace, son of latter, born in Paris, distinguished also for his battle-pieces in flattery of French Chauvinism (17891863).
