Ætherius
, was an architect of the 6th century, under the reign of Anastasius I. emperor of the east, who
stowed many honours upon him, and admitted him into
his council. He is said to have built the great wall, ordered by Anastasius, to preserve Constantinople from the
inroads of the Huns, Goths, and Bulgarians. It was
eighteen leagues in length, and twenty feet in breadth.
He built also several edifices in Constantinople, particularly
the Cbalcis in the grand palace. 2
