Terburgh, Gerard
, a Dutch painter, was born in
1608,atZwol, nearOveryssel. He learned the art of painting
under his father, who had passed some years at Rome. He
travelled over the chief part of Europe, and was every
where much encouraged. His subjects were usually conversations, persons employed in games, or in humorous
adventures. His colouring is lively, and his pictures highly
finished. But he is not thought equal either to Mieris or
Gerard Dow, in the same style. He died in 1681, at the
age of seventy-three. 2
