COUNTERSCARP
, is that side of the ditch that is next the country; or properly the talus that supports the earth of the covert-way: though by this word is often understood the whole covert-way, with | its parapet and glacis. And so it must be understood when it is said, The enemy lodged themselves on the counterscarp.
