HELIOSCOPE
, a kind of telescope peculiarly adapted for viewing and observing the sun without hurting the eye.
There are various kinds of this instrument, usually made by employing coloured glass for the object or eyeglass, or both; and sometimes only using an eye-glass blacked by holding it over the smoke or flame of a lamp or candle, which is Huygens's way.—See Dr<*> Hooke's treatise on Helioscopes.
