Popish Plot

.

A plot in the reign of Charles II. to massacre the Protestants, burn London, and assassinate the king. Titus Oates invented this “wisescheme, and obtained great wealth by revealing it; but ultimately he was pilloried, whipped, and imprisoned. (See Gunpowder Plot.)
