Smiglecius, Martin

, a learned Jesuit, was a native of Poland, and born in 1562. He entered among the Jesuits at Rome in 1581, and made great progress in his studies. Being sent back to Poland, he taught philosophy at Wilna for four years, and divinity for ten. He became, from his reputation for learning, rector of several colleges, and superior of the convent at Cracow. He died July 26, 1618, at the age of fifty-six. He published many works against the Protestants, and particularly against the Socinians, but merits notice chiefly for his system of “Logic,” printed at Ingolstadt, 1618, 2 vols. 4to. Rapin styles this a noble work, and it certainly once had considerable reputation. 2
