Swollen. (Anglo - Saxon, bolla, a bowl.) Hence “joints bolnebig” (Golding), and “bolne in pride” (Phaer). The seed capsule or pod of flax is called a “boll.”

“The barley was in the ear, and the flax was bolled.”—Exod. ix. 31.
