Hypʹocritesʹ Isle

,

called by Rabelais Chaneph, which is the Hebrew for “hypocrisy.” Rabelais says it is wholly inhabited by sham saints, spiritual comedians, bead-tumblers, mumblers of avemariʹas, and such like sorry rogues, who lived on the alms of passengers, like the hermit of Lormont. (Pantagruel, iv. 63.)
