and Sienna. He was for five years secretary to the duke of Milan, and died of the stone at the baths of Sienna, in 1483. He has been accused, but without proof, of
, the brother of Benedetto, and usually called Francis D'Arezzo, or Aretin, from the place of his birth, was born in 1418. The celebrated Francis Philelphus was his preceptor in polite learning; after which he studied law under the ablest professors, and became himself one of their number, teaching that faculty at Bologna, Ferrara, and Sienna. He was for five years secretary to the duke of Milan, and died of the stone at the baths of Sienna, in 1483. He has been accused, but without proof, of the grossest avarice. If he left vast wealth, it was owing to the profits of his profession, of which he was acknowledged to be the ablest and most successful practitioner. A journey which he made to Rome, when Sixtus IV. was Pope, has given rise to another story, equally without proof, that he solicited to be made Cardinal, which the Pope refused, on pretence of the injury that would accrue to learning from such a promotion. Another story is recorded, more to his honour. While professor of law at Ferrara, he had occasion to lecture to his scholars on the advantages of a character known for probity and honour; and, in order to exemplify his doctrine, he went in the night, accompanied by only one servant, broke open the butchers’ stalls, and took away some pieces. The law-students were immediately suspected of the robbery, and two of them, of indifferent character, were imprisoned. The Professor then went before the Duke, demanded their release, and accused himself: having proved the fact, which was with difficulty believed, he took the opportunity to show the advantage of a good character, and the dangers of a bad one.

He now endeavoured to console himself by cultivating
his poetical talent, an employment which had been long interrupted, and resumed his poem on the chase, for which
he had collected a great many notes and observations in
the East and in France. In 1546, the inhabitants of Reggio chosd‘ him public professor of Greek and Latm, with a
handsome allowance, and the rights of citizenship. In this
office he continued about three years, after which the grand
duke, Cosmo I. invited him to be professor of the belles
lettres at Pisa. After filling this chair for seventeen years,
he exchanged it for that of moral and political science, and
lectured on Aristotle’s two celebrated treatises on these subjects. Such was his attachment to that university, and to
the grand duke, that during the war of Sienna, when Cosmo was obliged to suspend payment of the professors’ salaries, Angelio pawned his furniture and books, that he
might be enabled to remain at his post, while his brethren
fled. And when the Siennese army, commanded by Peter’
Strozzi, approached Pisa, which had no troops for its defence, our professor put arms into the hands of the students of the university, trained and disciplined them, and
with their assistance defended the city until the grand dukewas able to send them assistance.
in 1575, the cardinal Ferdinand de Medicis, who was
afterwards grand duke, took Angelio to Rome with him,
settled a large pension on him, and by other princely marks
of favour, induced him to reside there, and encouraged
him to complete a poem, which he had begun thirty years
before, on the conquest of Syria and Palestine by the
Christians. Angelio caused all his poems to be reprinted
at Rome in 1585, and dedicated to this cardinal, who rewarded him by a present of two thousand florins of gold.
When he became grand duke, Angelio followed him to
Florence, and there at Jength published his “Syrias.
”
He was now enriched by other pensions, and was enabled
to pass his declining years, mostly at Pisa, in opulence and
ease. He died Feb. 29, 1596, in his seventy-ninth year,
and was interred in the Campo Santo, with great pomp;
and a funeral oration was read in the academy of Florence,
and, what was still a higher honour, as he was not a member, in that of Delia Crusca.

most celebrated physicians of the fifteenth century, and not
less esteemed as a philosopher and divine. In such admiration was he held, that his contemporaries hailed him as
another Aristotle and a new Hippocrates; and such was his
memory, that he could readily and promptly give answers
to any questions or doubts that were propounded from the
works of Plato or Aristotle. He was, according to Ghilini,
professor of medicine at Ferrara, and was a member of the
council called to adjust the religious disputes between the
Greeks and Latins. Castellanus informs us, that when Nicholas of Este founded the university of Parma, Bencius
was appointed one of its first professors, and this Bencius
himself confirms in the introduction to his commentary on

where he died Dec. 3, 1775. In 1717 he went to Bologna,
and studied botany, natural history, mathematics, and
natural philosophy. Having taken the degree of doctor in
medicine in 17 19, he returned to his country, but afterwards resided for some time at Bologna and Padua before
he settled and began practice at Rimini. Here also he
improved his acquaintance with botany, and in his different
tours accumulated a very fine collection of specimens of
natural history. In 1741, he was appointed professor of
anatomy in the university of Sienna, but his attachment to
las favourite studies induced him to return to Rimini, where
he endeavoured to revive the academy of the Lincei, the
members of which assembled at his house. He had formerly, when only twenty-two years of age, acted as their
secretary, and gave a history of them in his edition of the
Phytobasanos. In honour of his merits and services, the
society caused a medal to be struck, with his portrait on
one side, and on the other a lynx, with the words ~“Lynceis restitutis.

a lawyer at Sienna, was born at that place in 1420, and
after acquiring some knowledge of the Latin language,
was put under the care of Francis Philelphus, an eminent
teacher at Sienna, who at the end of two years declared
he was his best scholar. Dati, however, at this time suffered not a little from the ridicule of his schoolfellows,
owing to a hesitation in his speech, which he is said to
have cured by the means which Demosthenes adopted, that
of speaking with small pebbles in his mouth. After
finishing his classical studies, he learned Hebrew of some
Jews, and then entered on a course of philosophy, jurisprudence, and theology. During his application to these
branches, Odo Anthony, duke of Urbino, from the very
favourable account he had of him, invited him to Urbino
to teach the belles lettres. Dati accordingly set out for
that city in April 1442, where he was received with every
mark of honour and friendship by the duke, but this prosperity was not of long duration. He had not enjoyed it
above a year and a half, when the duke, whose excesses
and tyranny had rendered him odious, was assassinated in
a public tumult, with two of his favourites; and Dati, who
was hated by the populace merely because he was respected
by the duke, was obliged to take refuge for his life in a
church, while the mob pillaged his house. The successor
of Odo, prince Frederick, endeavoured to console Dati for
this misfortune, and offered him a pension, besides recompense for all he had lost; but Dati could not be reconciled
to a residence so liable to interruption, and in 1444 returned to Sienna. Here, after refusing the place of secretary of the briefs, offered to him by pope Nicholas V. he
opened a school for rhetoric and the classics, and acquired
so much reputation, that the cardinal of Sienna, Francis
Piccolomini, formally granted him permission to lecture on
the Holy Scriptures, although he was a married man; and
at the same time gave him a similar licence to teach and
lecture on any subject, not only in his college, but in all
public places, and even in the church, where, his son informs us, he once preached during Lent. He was also
much employed in pronouncing harangues on public
occasions in Latin, many of which are among his works.
Nor were his talents confined to literature, but were the
means of advancing him to the first offices of the magistracy, and the republic of Sienna entrusted him with the
negociation of various affairs of importance at Rome and
elsewhere. In 1 J-57 he was appointed secretary to the republic, which he held for two years. Towards the close
of his life he laid aside the study of profane authors for
that of the Scriptures and ecclesiastical historians. He
died of the plague at Sienna, April 6, 1478. His son

” of which there are two editions,

, an eminent scholar and translator, was
born at Montacute, in Somersetshire in his youth he was
for some time a chorister, which gave him an opportunity
of being instructed in Latin as well as music. Being
afterwards sent to Winchester school for academical education, he was admitted of New college, Oxford, and
chosen fellow in 1552, studying chiefly the civil law. In
queen Mary’s reign he was made chief master of a noted
free-school at St. Edmundsbury, in Suffolk, where he acquired great reputation as a teacher. This station he retained for some part of queen Elizabeth’s reign, but an
information having been laid against him, as unqualified
by the laws of the reformation, he was obliged to quit it.
Some time after he went to Flanders, and afterwards to
Rome, where he was admitted into the English college,
studied theology for four years, and took orders. Returning afterwards to Flanders, he became confessor to
the English nuns at Louvain, where he lived forty years,
employing his leisure hours in translating several books favourable to the Roman catholic religion. He died at an
advanced age, Dec. 27, 1615, with an excellent character
from those of his persuasion, for learning and piety. His

learned civilians in the sixteenth century, was born at Castello Franco in Tuscany, Nov. 14th, 1489. At twelve years
old he was sent to Pisa, where he studied the civil and
canon law for three years; he spent two other years in the
university of Sienna, after which he went to Rome, and
was made secretary to cardinal Salviati. He was admitted
an advocate at the age of nineteen years, after a public disputation before a numerous audience of cardinals and
bishops. He then left his Christian name of Dominicus,
and took that of Æmilius, according to a custom very prevalent among the literati of Italy. Having accepted of the
chair of law-professor, he explained so learnedly the law de
Rebus creditis (of things with which persons are trusted)
that it gained him the title of secretary to Leo the Xth.
He exercised that office for some years, after which he regigned it voluntarily, and retired into his native country.
He left it again at the end of two years, his father having
been killed there, and went to Tridino in the dukedom of
Montferrat, where he married; and having continued there
four years, he attended the marquis of Montferrat to Rome
and to Naples, that marquis commanding part of the French
army. This expedition of, the French proving unsuccessful, Ferreti endeavoured to return into his native country,
but he was taken by the Spaniards, and could not obtain
his liberty but by paying a ransom. He went into France,
and taught the law at Valencewith so much reputation,
that Francis I. made him counsellor in the parliament of
Paris, and sent him as envoy to the Venetians, and to the
Florentines. He acquitted himself so well of that employment, that it determined the marquis of Montferrat to send
him to the court of Charles V. after he had obtained Francis I.'s consent for that journey. Ferreti attended the emperor in the expedition of Africa; and as soon as he was
returned into France, the king sent him to the Florentines
during the war in which they were engaged against the
emperor. He went back to France when they were subdued, and followed the court to Nice, where the pope,
Charles V. and the king of France had an interview: having afterwards resigned the post of counsellor in the parliament, he went to Lyons, and thence to Florence, where
he was admitted a citizen. He was sent for to Avignon
to teach the law there. His yearly stipend was at first 550
crowns, then 800, and then 1000; a sum that had never
been given to any professor in that university. He gained
the love both of the inhabitants and of the students, who
shewed it in a very remarkable manner after his death; for
when his successor Craveta began his lectures by strictures
upon Ferreti, the scholars shewed their attachment to their
old master by hissing and driving him from the place. He
died at Avignon July 14, 1552. Ferreti was a man of general learning, and well acquainted with classical literature.
He gave an edition of the principal orations of Cicero,

This council was called to continue the proceedings of that of Constance against the Hussites, and other continental reformers, and our prelate distinguished himself so much as to become a favourite with Pope Martin V. who would have promoted him to be archbishop of York, had not the king as well as the dean and chapter opposed his -election with such firmness as to oblige the pope to yield. Flemming consequently remained in his diocese of Lincoln. In 1428, he executed that decree of the council of Constance which ordered that the bones of Wicklilf should be taken up and burned; the harmless remains of a man whom he once honoured with the warmth of his zeal, and supported with the vigour of his talents.

A little before that time his father and mother, who were Waldenses, had fled from the Valtoline into England, from the persecutions of popery; but when Edward the Sixth died, and the protestant religion became oppressed under Mary, they left England, and went to some other country, where John Florio received his juvenile literature. Upon the re-establishment of protestantism by Elizabeth, they returned; and Florio for a time lived in Oxford. About 1576, Barnes bishop of Durham, sending his son to Magdalencollege, Florio was appointed to attend him as preceptor in French, and Italian; at which time he was admitted a member of that college, and became a teacher of those languages in the university. After James came to the cvown, he was appointed tutor to prince Henry in those languages; and at length made one of the privychamber, and clerk of the closet to queen Anne, to whom he was also tutor. He was a very useful man in his profession, zealous for the protestant religion, and much devoted to the English nation. Retiring to Fulham in Middlesex, to avoid the plague which was then in London, he was seized and carried off by it in 1625, aged about eighty.

” Of this pleasing publication two editions
were printed. In 1784 he circulated, also without his name,
“Proposals for establishing, at sea, a Marine School, or
seminary for seamen, as a means of improving the plan
of the Marine Society,
” &c. His object was to fit up a
man of war as a marine school. In 1788 he published a
large 4to volume, entitled “Morsels of Criticism, tending
to illustrate some few passages in the Holy Scriptures upon
philosophical principles and an enlarged view of things.
”
The fate of this work was somewhat singular. The author
received sixty copies for presents; and the greater part of the
remaining impression, being little called for, was converted
into waste paper. Some time after, however, the notice
taken of it in that popular poem, “The Pursuits of Literature,
” brought it again into notice; a second edition
appeared in 8vo, and a second volume of the 4to in 1801.
This works abounds in singular opinions: among others,
the author attempts to prove that John the Baptist was an
angel from heaven, and the same who formerly appeared
in the person of Elijah: that there will be a second appearance of Christ upon earth (something like this, however, is held by other writers): that this globe is a kind of comet,
which is continually tending towards the sun, and will at
length approach so near as to be ignited by the solar rays
upon the elementary fluid of fire: and that the place of
punishment allotted for wicked men is the centre of the
earth, which is the bottomless pit, &c, &c. It is unnecessary
to add, that these reveries did not procure Mr. King much
reputation as a philosophical commentator on the Scriptures.
His next publications indicated the variety of his meditations and pursuits. In 1793 he produced “An Imitation
of the Prayer of Abel,
” and “Considerations on the Utility of the National Debt.
” In Remarks concerning Stones said to
have fallen from the Clouds, both in these days and in
ancient times;
” the foundation of which was the surprizing
shower of stones said, on the testimony of several persons,
to have fallen in Tuscany, June 16, 1796, and investigated
in an extraordinary and full detail by the abbate Soldani,
professor of mathematics in the university of Sienna. This
subject has since employed other pens, but no decisive
conclusions have been agreed upon. Mr. King’s next
publication, however, belonged to the province in which
he was best able to put forth his powers of research
“Vestiges of Oxford Castle or, a small fragment of a
work intended to be published speedily, on the history of
ancient castles, and on the progress of architecture,

to assert the genuineness of the second book of Esdras in
the Apocrypha. Mr. Gough criticised this work with much
freedom and justice in the Gentleman’s Magazine, and
Mr. King thought himself insulted. On his adding “A
Supplement to his Remarks
” in Critical Disquisitions on Isaiah xviii, in a Letter to
Mr. King.
” While preparing a fourth volume of his
“Mummenta,
” Mr. King died, April 16, 1807, and wa
buried in the church -yard at Beckenham, where his country-seat was. Mr. King was a man of extensive reading,
and considerable learning, and prided himself particularly
on intense thinking, which, however, was not always
under the regulation of judgment.

Towards the end of her father’s reign, at the earnest solicitation of queen Catharine Parr, she undertook to translate Erasmus’s “Paraphrase on the gospel of St. John*'
but being cast into sickness, as Udall relates, partly by
overmuch study in this work, after she had made some
progress therein, she left the rest to be done by Dr. Maliet,
her chaplain. This translation is printed in the first volume of
” Erasmus’s Paraphrase upon the New Testament,“London, 1548, folio; and before it is a Preface, written
by Udall, the celebrated master of Eton-school, and addressed to the queen dowager. This Preface contains some
remarks illustrative of the history of the times. Among
other things, Udall takes occasion in it to observe to her
majesty,
” the great number of noble women at that time
in England, not only given to the study of human sciences
and strange tongues, but also so thoroughly expert in the
Holy Scriptures, that they were able to compare with the
best writers, as well in enditing and penning of godly and
fruitful treatises, to the instruction and edifying of realms
in the knowledge of God, as also in translating good books
out of Latin or Greek into English, for the use and commodity of such as are rude and ignorant of the said tongues.
It was now,“he said,
” no news in England, to see young
damsels in noble houses, and in the courts of princes, instead of cards, and other instruments of idle trifling, to
have continually in their hands either Psalms, Homilies,
and other devout meditations, or else Paul’s epistles, or
some book of Holy Scripture matters, and as familiarly
both to read or reason thereof in Greek, Latin, French, or
Italian, as in English. It was now a common thing to see
young virgins so trained in the study of good letters, that
they willingly set all other vain pastimes at nought for
learning’s sake. It was now no news at all, to see queens
and ladies of most high estate and progeny, instead of
courtly dalliance, to embrace virtuous exercises of reading
and writing, and with most earnest study, both early and
late, to apply themselves to the acquiring of knowledge,
as well in all other liberal arts and disciplines, as also most
especially of God and his holy word. And in this behalf,“says he,
” like as to your highness, as well for composing
and setting forth many godly Psalms, and divers other
contemplative meditations, as also for causing these paraphrases to be translated into our vulgar tongue, England
can never be able to render thanks sufficient; so may it
never be able, as her deserts require, enough to praise
and magnify the most noble, the most virtuous, the most
witty, and the most studious lady Mary’s grace, for taking
such pain and travail in translating this paraphrase of Erasmus upon the gospel of St. John. What could be a more
plain declaration of her most constant purpose to promote
God’s word, and the free grace of his gospel“&c.
Udall, however, was mistaken; as she never entertained
any such purpose; for, soon after her accession to the
throne, a proclamation was issued for calling in and suppressing this very book, and all others that had the least
tendency towards furthering the Reformation. And Walpole is of opinion, that the sickness which came upon her
while she was translating St. John, was all affected;
” for,“says he,
” she would not so easily have been cast into
sickness, had she been employed on the Legends of St.
Teresa, or St. Catharine of Sienna."
“Dialogues,” there are “Italian Sermons,” in 4 vols. printed 1543; an “Italian. Letter to the Lords of Sienna, containing an Account of his Faith and Doctrine;” another,
In 1547 he was invited, together with Peter Martyr, into
England by abp. Cranmer, to have their joint assistance in
carrying on the reformation. They arrived in December
that year; and, repairing to Lambeth, were kindly received by Cranmer. They were entertained there for
some time along with Bucer, Fagius, and others; and
Ochinus, as well as Martyr, was made a prebendary of
Canterbury. He laboured heartily in the business of the
Reformation; and his dialogue, upon the unjust usurped
primacy of the bishop of Rome, was translated into Latin
by Ponet, bishop of Winchester, and published in 1549.
But, upon the death of Edward VI. being forced, as well
as Martyr, to leave England, he retired to Strasburg with
that friend, where they arrived in 1553. In his absence
he was, among other persons who had preferments in Canterbury, declared contumacious. From Strasburg he went
to Basil, and was called thence, in 1555, to Zurich, to be
minister of an Italian church which was forming there.
This church consisted of some refugees from Locarno, one
of the four bailiwics which the Switzers possess in Italy,
who were hindered from the public exercise of the reformed religion by the opposition of the popish cantons.
Ochinus made no difficulty to subscribe the articles of faith
agreed upon by the church of Zurich, and governed this
Italian church till 1563; when he was banished thence by
the magistrates of the town, on account of some dialogues
he published, in which he maintained the doctrine of polygamy. He is said to have been prompted to this by the
infidelity of his wife. From Zurich, he went to Basil;
but, not being suffered to stay there, he fled in great distress into Moravia, where he fell in with the Socinians,
and joined them. Stanislaus Lubienietski, the great patron of this sect, gives the following account of his last
days, in his “Hist. Reformat. Polori.
” Ochinus, says he,
retired into Moravia, and into Poland, and even there he
was not out of the reach of Calvin’s letters. He returned
into Moravia, after king Sigismund’s edict; who, in!564,
punished with banishment all those that were called Tritheists, Atheists, &c. Some gentlemen endeavoured to
keep him in Poland; but he answered, that men must
obey the magistrates, and that he would obey them, even
were he to die among the wolves in the woods. During
his travels, he fell sick of the plague at Pincksow, and received there all possible offices of kindness from one of the
brethren, named Philippovius. His daughter and two sons,
whom he carried along with him, died of the plague; but
he had buried his wife before he had left Zurich. As for
himself, he continued his journey to Moravia, and within
three weeks died at Slakow, in 1564, aged 77.
His character is variously represented by different authors, and certainly appears not to have been very consistent. Bayle observes, that the confession he made publicly, on the change of his religion, is remarkable. He
acknowledged, in a preface, that, if he could have continued, without danger of his life, to preach the truth,
after the manner he had preached it for some years, he
would never have laid down the habit of his order; but, as
he did not find within himself that courage which is requisite to undergo martyrdom, he took sanctuary in England,
where he probably might have remained in reputation, had
not the reformation been disturbed on the accession of
Mary. Abroad, after he had given offence to the Catvinists, the Socinians afforded him some protection for a
while, but even to them he became obnoxious, and at last
sunk into a species of heresy which the boasted charity of
Socinianism itself could not tolerate. They class him,
however, among their writers, as appears by Sandius’s
“Bibl. Anti-trinitariorum.
” His writings are rather numerous than bulky. Besides the “Dialogues,
” there are

where, though he was born, yet he was not beloved. He purchased a country-house in the neighbourhood of Sienna, called Ceciniano, and pleased himself with the fancy
, an excellent writer in the sixteenth century, was born at Veroli, in the Campagna di Roma, and descended of noble and ancient families by both his parents. He was baptised by the name of Anthony, which according to the custom of the times, he altered to the classical form of Aonius. He applied himself early to the Greek and Latin languages, in which he made great progress, and then proceeded to philosophy and divinity. The desire he had of knowledge, prompted him to travel through the greatest part of Italy; and to listen to the instructions of the most famous professors in every place he visited. His longest residence was at Rome, where he continued for six years, till that city was taken by Charles V. when the disorders committed by the troops of that prince leaving no hopes of enjoying tranquillity, he resolved to depart, and retire to Tuscany. He had at this time a great inclination to travel into France, Germany, and even as far as Greece; but the narrowness of his fortune would not admit of this. On his arrival in Tuscany, he chose Sienna for his abode, to which he was induced by the pleasantness of the situation, and the sprightliness and sagacity of the inhabitants: and accordingly he sold his estate at Veroli, with the determination never to see a place any more, where, though he was born, yet he was not beloved. He purchased a country-house in the neighbourhood of Sienna, called Ceciniano, and pleased himself with the fancy of its having formerly belonged to Cecina, one of Cicero’s clients. Here he proposed to retire on his leisure- days, and accordingly embellished it as much as. possible. At Sienna he married ajoung woman, of whom he was passionately fond, and who brought him four children, two boys and two girls. He was also professor of polite letters, and had a great number of pupils.

But his career was disturbed by a quarrel he had with
one of his colleagues, who was enraged to see his own
reputation eclipsed by the superior lustre of Palearius.
We are not told the particular point upon which the contest commenced; but it is certain that our professor was
defended by Peter Aretin, who, perhaps more to revenge
his own cause, or gratify a detracting humour, than from
any respect for Palearius, composed, against his envious
rival, an Italian comedy or farce, which was acted upon
the stage at Venice; and so poignant was the ridicule,
that the subject of it thought proper to quit Sienna, and
retire to Lucca. Hither he was followed some time after,
though with much reluctance, by Palearius, concerning
which we have the following account: Anthony Bellantes,
a nobleman of Sienna, being impeached of several misdemeanors, employed Palearius to plead his cause, who
made so excellent a speech before the senate of that city
in his defence, that he was acquitted and dismissed; but,
the same nobleman having some time after accused certain
monks of robbing his grandmother, employed his advocate
again to support the charge. The monks accused, making
oath of their innocence, were cleared by the court, but
were incensed at the prosecution, and aspersed Palearius
both in their sermons, and on all other occasions, as an
impious wretch, unfit to be harboured in a Christian country. They also declared him a heretic, because he disapproved several superstitious practices; neither did they
approve of the book he had written on the “Death of
Christ.
” Palearius, however, defended himself with so
much strength of reason and eloquence, that the accusations were dropped. Yet finding himself still exposed to
vexatious persecutions, he thought proper to accept of an
invitation to teach polite literature at Lucca.

but settled afterwards at Sienna. He was a successful
writer of the drama; but, though involved in that seducing
pursuit, preserved the credit of exemplary morals, as well
as genius. His general charity was extreme, but he was
particularly considerate of the wants of literary men, His
works are numerous, all written in Italian, which language
he was the first author who applied to philosophical subjects. He died at Sienna on the 12th of March, 1578. The

, whose name was Æneas Sylvius Piccolomini,
was born in 1405, at Corsignano in Sienna,
where his father lived in exile. He was educated at the
grammar-school of that place; but his parents being in low
circumstances, he was obliged, in his early years, to submit to many servile employments. In 1423, by the assistance of his friends, he was enabled to go to the university
of Sienna, where he applied himself to his studies with
great success, and in a short time published several pieces
in the Latin and Tuscan languages. In 1431 he attended
cardinal Dominic Capranica to the council of Basil as his
secretary. He was likewise in the same capacity with cardinal Albergoti, who sent him to Scotland to mediate a
peace betwixt the English and Scots; and he was in that
country when king James I. was murdered. Upon his return from Scotland, he was made secretary to the council
of Basil, which he defended against the authority of the
popes, both by his speeches and writings, particularly in
a dialogue and epistles which he wrote to the rector and
university of Cologn. He was likewise made by that
council clerk of the ceremonies, abbreviator, and one of
the duodecemviri, or twelve men, an office of great importance. He was employed in several embassies; once
to Trent, another time to Frankfort, twice to Constance,
and as often to Savoy, and thrice to Strasburg, where he
had an intrigue with a lady, by whom he had a son: he
has given an account of this affair in a letter to his father,
in which he endeavours to vindicate himself with much indecent buffoonery. In 1439 he was employed in the service of pope Felix; and being soon after sent ambassador
to the emperor Frederic, he was crowned by him with the
poetic laurel, and ranked amongst his friends. In 1442
he was sent for from Basil by the emperor, who appointed
him secretary to the empire, and raised him to the senatorial order. He could not at first be prevailed on to condemn the council of Basil, nor to go over absolutely to
Eugenius’s party, but remained neuter. However, when
the emperor Frederic began to favour Eugenius, Æneas
likewise changed his opinion gradually. He afterwards
represented the emperor in the diet of Nuremberg, when
they were consulting about methods to put an end to the
schism, and was sent ambassador to Eugenius: at the persuasion of Thomas Sarzanus, the apostolical legate in
Germany, he submitted to Eugenius entirely, and made
the following speech to his holiness, as related by John Gobelin, in his Commentaries of the life of Pius II. “Most
holy father (said he), before I declare the emperor’s commission, give me leave to say one word concerning myself.
I do not question but you have heard a great many things
which are not to my advantage. They ought not to have
been mentioned to you; but I must confess, that my accusers have reported nothing but what is true. I own I
have said, and done, and written, at Basil, many things
against your interests; it is impossible to deny it: yet all
this has been done not with a design to injure you, but to
serve the church. I have been in an error, without question; but I have been in just the same circumstances with
many great men, as particularly with Julian cardinal of St.
Angelo, with Nicholas archbishop of Palermo, with Lewis
du Pont (Pontanus) the secretary of the holy see; men
who are esteemed the greatest luminaries in the law, and
doctors of the truth; to omit mentioning the universities
and colleges which are generally against you. Who would
not have erred with persons of their character and merit?
It is true, that when I discovered the error of those at
Basil, I did not at first go over to you, as the greatest
part did; but being afraid of falling from one error to
another, and by avoiding Charybdis, as the proverb expresses it, to run upon Scylla, I joined myself, after a
long deliberation and conflict within myself, to those who
thought proper to continue in a state of neutrality. I lived
three years in the emperor’s court in this situation of mind,
where having an opportunity of hearing constantly the
disputes between those of Basil and your legates, I was
convinced that the truth was on your side: it was upon this
motive that, when the emperor thought fit to send me to
your clemency, I accepted the opportunity with the utmost
satisfaction, in hopes that I should be so happy as to gain
your favour again: I throw myself therefore at your feet;
and since I sinned out of ignorance, I entreat you to grant
me your pardon. After which I shall open to you the emperor’s intentions.
” This was the prelude to the famous
retraction which Æneas Sylvius made afterwards. The
pope pardoned every thing that was past; and in a short
time made him his secretary, without obliging him to quit
the post which he had with the emperor.

Upon the decease of pope Eugenius, Æneas was chosen
by the cardinals to preside in the conclave till another pope
should be elected. He was made bishop of Trieste by
pope Nicholas, and went again into Germany, where he
was appointed counsellor to the emperor, and had the direction of all the important affairs of the empire. Four
years after he was made archbishop of Sienna; and in 1452
he attended Frederic to Rome, when he went to receive
the imperial crown. Æneas, upon his return, was named
legate of Bohemia and Austria. About 1456, being sent
by the emperor into Italy, to treat with pope Callixtus III.
about a war with the Turks, he was made a cardinal.
Upon the decease of Callixtus, in 1458 he was elected
pope by the name of Pius II. After his promotion to the
papal chair he published a bull, retracting all he had
written in defence of the council of Basil, with an apology
which shows how little he was influenced by principle:
“We are men (says he), and we have erred as men; we
do not deny, but that many things which we have said or
written, may justly be condemned: we have been seduced,
like Paul, and have persecuted the church of God through
ignorance; we now follow St. Austin’s example, who,
having suffered several erroneous sentiments to escape him
in his writings, retracted them; we do just the same thing:
we ingenuously confess our ignorance, being apprehensive
lest what we have written in our youth should occasion
some error, which may prejudice the holy see. For if it
is suitable to any person’s character to maintain the eminence and glory of the first throne of the church, it is certainly so to ours, whom the merciful God, out of pure
goodness, has raised to the dignity of vicegerent of Christ,
without any merit on our part. For all these reasons, we
exhort you and advise you in the Lord, not to pay any
regard to those writings, which injure in any manner the
authority of the apostolic see, and assert opinions which
the holy Roman church does not receive. If you find any
thing contrary to this in our dialogues and letters, or in
any other of our works, despise such notions, reject them,
follow what we maintain now; believe what I assert now I
am in years, rather than what I said when I was young:
regard a pope rather than a private man; in short, reject
Æneas Sylvius, and receive Pius II.
”
