Borromeo, St. Carlo (Borrome`o, St. Carlo) , cardinal and archbishop of Milan, a prominent member of the Council of Trent, and contributed to the Tridentine Catechism; conspicuous by his self-sacrificing offices during a plague in the city of which he was the archbishop (1538‒1584).
