Cavalier, Jean (16791740)

Cavalier, Jean, leader of the Camisards (q.v.), born at Ribaute, in the dep. of Gard; bred a baker; held his own against Montreval and Villars; in 1704 concluded peace with the latter on honourable terms; haughtily received by Louis XIV., passed over to England; served against France, and died governor of Jersey (16791740).
