, the son of Sandon, was another celebrated Stoic philosopher. He was born at Tarsus, or perhaps at Cana, a village near it, whence he was surnamed Cananita. He lived at Rome and on account of his learning, wisdom, and moderation, was highly esteemed by Augustus. His opinion and advice bad great weight with the emperor, and are said to have led him into a milder plan of government than he had at first adopted. He obtained, for his fellow-citizens, the inhabitants of Tarsus, relief from a part of the burthen of taxes which had been imposed upon them, and was on this account honoured with an annual festival. Athenodorus was intrusted by Augustus with the education of the young prince Claudius and that he might the more successfully execute his charge, his illustrious pupil became for a while resident in his house. This philosopher retired in his old age to Tarsus, where he died in his eighty-second year. Other particulars of him are given in the General Dictionary, and in the authorities cited by Brucker, but there appear to have been two of the name (besides the one of whom we have before given an account), or there is much confusion in all the writers we have had an opportunity of consulting respecting this one.

St. Cyril, on the contrary, calls him the enemy of the glory of Jesus Christ, and regards him as the fore-runner of Nestorins. Diodorus was one of the first commentators who adhered to the literal sense of Scripture, without expatiating in the fields of allegory; but only some fragments of his writings are come down to us, in the “Catena patrum Grrccorum.” His contemporaries and immediate successors differ very essentially as to his real character, as may be seen in our authorities.

He was the author of several works on divination, the laws, learning, &c. which have been quoted with respect by Cicero and others. He is said to have lived to the age of eighty-eight years, and philosophized to the last. That he was highly esteemed by his contemporaries, is evident from his being appointed in conjunction with Carneades, the head of the academies, and Critolaus, the chief of the peripatetic school, to the embassy to Home and as a proof how well his practice conformed to his principles, we are told, that when he was once discoursing against anger, an insolent young man, with the hope of exposing him to the ridicule of his audience, spat upon him, and otherwise contumeliously treated him, upon which the philosopher observed with meekness, “I am not angry, but I am doubtful whether I ought not to be so.

, of Tarsus, a Greek rhetorician of the second century, is recorded as a remarkable instance of early maturity and early deficiency of talents. He flourished about the year 161. At fifteen he taught rhetoric publicly; at seventeen he wrote his art of rhetoric; and at twenty, two books or^t' iSewv, or on oratorical forms: but in his twenty-fifth year he lost his memory, and the faculty of speech, which he nver recovered, though he lived to be old. Of his book on oratory, which consisted of five parts, the first part only is lost. There are extant also, 2. “De inventione Oratoria,” four books. 3. “. De formis,” above-mentioned. 4. “Methodus apti et ponderosi generis dicendi.” These were published at Paris in 1531, 4to, with “Aphihonii Sophistæ præludia,” and in two or three subsequent editions. The best is that of Caspar Laurentius, published at Geneva, in 1614, in 8vo.

, archbishop of Canterbury, was a monk of Tarsus. He was ordained bishop by pope Vitalianus, and sent into England in the year 668, to govern the church of Canterbury. Being kindly received by king Egbert, he restored the faith, and promoted, or rather founded, a form of ecclesiastical discipline, which he is said to have exercised with great rigour, placing and displacing several bishops in an arbitrary manner, particularly those belonging to the diocese of York. He died Sept. 19, 690, aged eighty -eight. He is said to have imported into England a great many valuable Mss. Godwin mentions a Homer, extant in his time, of exquisite beauty. He is also the supposed founder of the school called Greeklade, whence arose the university of Oxford, but this is somewhat fabulous. What remains of his form of discipline, called the “Penitential,” and of his other works, has been collected by James Petit, and printed at Paris, 1677, 2 vols. 4to, with learned notes.
