Lingard, John (17711851)

Lingard, John, historian, born at Winchester, the son of a carpenter; besides a work on the “Antiquity of the Anglo-Saxon Church,” wrote a “History of England from the Roman Invasion to the Reign of William III.,” the first written that shows anything like scholarly accuracy, and fairly impartial, though the author's religious views as a Roman Catholic, it is alleged, distort the facts a little (17711851).
