Scheffel, Joseph Victor von (18261886)

Scheffel, Joseph Victor von, German poet, bred to law, but abandoned it for literature; his first and best work “Der Trompeter von Sakkingen,” a charming tale in verse of the Thirty Years' War, succeeded by “Gaudeamus,” a collection of songs and ballads familiar to the German students all over the Fatherland (18261886).
