.—As an adequate reward for those strong doses of intolerance, bigotry, superstition, and fa­naticism, which are administered from the pulpit, and as a reasonable compensation for the general error and mischief which is superinduced in the minds of the ignorant and deluded, the wily priest demands one tenth of all the bountiful gifts of cul­tivated nature. And he will tell you with a grave face and uplifted eyes, that eternal damnation is the sine qua non of a refusal to this sacred de­mand!!!
