Bernini, Giovanni Lorenzo, an Italian painter, sculptor, and architect, born at Naples; produced his “Apollo and Daphne” at eighteen, his masterpiece; was architect to the Pope, and designed the colonnade of St. Peter's; he died wealthy (15981680).
