Dumfriesshire

Dumfriesshire, a south-western Border county of Scotland; an agricultural district, which slopes from a northern pastoral region to the Solway, and is traversed by the fertile valleys of Nithsdale and Annandale.

Population (circa 1900) given as 74,000.
