Sanchez, Gaspar

, a learned Jesuit, was born at Cifuentes, in New Castile, about 1553. According to the practice of the society, with such young men as have distinguished themselves in their studies, he was appointed to teach the learned languages and the belles lettres in the Jesuits’ colleges at Oropesa, Madrid, and other places, and was at last chosen professor of divinity at Alcala. Here he spent thirteen years in commenting on the Scriptures, the result of which he published in various volumes in folio, at different times. Jt is perhaps no inconsiderable proof of their merit that Poole has made frequent references to them in his “Synopsis Criticorum.” He died in 1628.2
