reflect that it could not now deprive him of the prospect of an easy competence. His character as a scholar was established in the university; he was become a fellow and
, a learned critic and philologist, was
born at Shrewsbury, and baptised at St; Alkmund’s church
June 22, 1704. His father followed the humble occupation
of a barber, and his son wasdesigned for the same business
but a strong passion for letters, which early displayed itself, being providentially fostered by the generous patronage of a neighbouring gentleman, enabled young Taylor
to fill a far higher station in society than that to which he
was entitled by his birth. The steps which led to this
happy change in his situation are worthy of notice. Taylor, the father, being accustomed to attend Edward Owen,
of Condover, esq. in his capacity of a barber, that gentleman used to inquire occasionally into the state of his
family, for what trade he designed his son, &c. These
inquiries never failed to produce a lamentation from the old
man, of the untoward disposition of his son Jack, “whom,
”
said he, “I cannot get to dress a wig or shave a beard, so
perpetually is he poring over books.
” Such complaints,
often repeated, at length awakened the attention of Mr.
Owen, who determined to send him to the university,
chiefly at his own expence. St. John’s in Cambridge,
which has an intimate connection with the free-school of
Shrewsbury, naturally presented itself as the place of his
academical education; and Mr. Taylor was doubtless assisted by one of the exhibitions founded in the college for
the youth of that school. Under this patronage he pursued
his studies in the university, and regularly took his degrees, that of B. A. in 1727, and of M. A. in 1731, and in
the preceding year was chosen fellow. Thus employed in
his favourite occupations, the periods of his return into his
native country were the only times which threw a transient
clouJ over the happy tenor of his life. On such occasions
he was expected to visit his patron, and to partake of the
noisy scenes of riotous jollity exhibited in the hospitable
mansion of a country gentleman of those days. The gratitude of young Taylor taught him the propriety of making
these sacrifices of his own comfort; but it could not prevent him from sometimes whispering his complaints into
the ears of his intimate friends. A difference of political
opinion afforded a more serious ground of difference. A
great majority of the gentry of Shropshire was at that period strenuous in their good wishes for the abdicated family.
Though educated at Cambridge, Taylor retained his attachment to toryism, but did not adopt all its excesses; and
he at length forfeited the favour of his patron, without the
hopes of reconciliation, hy refusing to drink a Jacobite
toast on his bare knees, as was then the custom. This refusal effectually precluded him from all hopes of sharing in
the great ecclesiastical patronage at that time enjoyed by
the Condover family, and inclined him, perhaps, to abandon the clerical profession for the practice of a civilian.
But however painful to his feelings this quarrel with his
benefactor might prove, he had the consolation to reflect
that it could not now deprive him of the prospect of an easy
competence. His character as a scholar was established in
the university; he was become a fellow and tutor of his
conege; and on the 30th of Jan. 1730, he was appointed
to deliver the Latin oration then annually pronounced in
St. Mary’s before the university on that solemn anniversary;
and at the following commencement he was selected to
speak the music speech, both of which were printed. This
last performance, of which but two instances occur in
the last century, viz. 1714 and 1730, was supposed to
require an equal share of learning and genius: for, besides
a short compliment in Latin to the heads of the university,
the orator was expected to produce a humourous copy of
English verses on the fashionable topics of the day, for the
entertainment of the female part of his audience: and in
the execution of this office (derived like the Terras filius of Oxford, from the coarse festivities of a grosser age) sometimes indulged a licentiousness which surprises one on perusal. The music speech of Mr. Taylor is sufficiently free;
and, though it does some credit to his poetical talents, is
not very civil to his contemporaries of Oxford, (whom he openly taxes with retaining their fellowships and wives at the expence of their oaths) or to the members of Trinity
college, in his own university, whom he ironically represents as the only members of Cambridge who could wipe off
the stigma of impoliteness imputed to them by the sister
university. This speech was printed by his young friend
and fellow collegian Mr. Bowyer, and the publication concludes with an ode designed to have been set to music.
These were not the only effusions of Mr. Taylor’s muse,
for in the Gent. Mag. 1779, p. 365, are some verses by him
on the marriage of Lady Margaret Harley to the duke of
Portland, and others reprinted by Mr. Nichols.

to be made a sequestrator of the royalists in Herefordshire,
but although he enriched himself considerably in this
office, and had a moiety of the bishop’s palace at Hereford settled on him, he conducted himself with such kindness and moderation as to be beloved of the king’s party.
At the restoration, he of course lost all he had gained as
the agent of usurpation, but his mild behaviour in that
ungracious office was not forgot, and by the interest of
some whom he had obliged, he was appointed commissary
of ammunition, &c. at Dunkirk, and about 1665 was made
keeper of the king’s stores and storehouses for shipping,
&c. at Harwich. The profits of this situation were probably not great, for he was much in debt at the time of his
death, which occasioned his valuable collections and Mss.
to be seized by his creditors, and dispersed as of no value.
He died Nov. 4, 1678, and was buried in the chancel of

At Rome he fixed himself with Adam Elsheimer, who was then in great vogue; of whose manner he became a thorough master, without neglecting at the same time the study of other great masters, and eiKleavouring to penetrate into the deepest mysteries of their practice. An abode of ten years in Italy enabled him to become one of the first in his style of painting; and a happy union in the schools of Rubens and Elsheimer formed in him a manner as agreeable as diverting. When Teniers returned to his own country, he entirely employed himself in painting small pictures, filled with figures of persons drinking, chemists, fairs, and merrymakings, with a number of country men and women. He spread so much taste and truth through his pictures, that few painters have ever produced a juster effect. The demand for them was universal; and even his master Rubens thought them an ornament to his cabinet, which was as high a compliment as could be paid them. Teniers drew his own character in his pictures, and in all his subjects every thing tends to joy and pleasure. He was always employed in copying after nature, whatsoever presented itself; and he accustomed his two sons to follow his example, and to paint nothing but from that infallible model, by which means they both became excellent painters. These are the only disciples we know of this David Tenters, styled the elder, who died at Antwerp in 1649, aged sixty-seven.

As to the age in which he flourished, it seems indisputably to be ascertained by two Idylliums that remain: one is addressed to Hiero king of Syracuse, and the other to Ptole^ ray Philadelphus, the Egyptian monarch. Hiero began his reign, as Casaubon asserts in his observations on Poly^bius, in the second year of the 126th olympiad, or about 275 years before Christ; and Ptolemy in the fourth year of the 123d olympiad. rev. Joseph Fisher, M. A. fellow of Queen’s college, Ox*
ford, vicar of Brough, and archdeacon of Carlisle, by whom
she had no children. Our author was born probably in the
early part of the last century, but the year cannot be ascertained. He was young, when in 1734 and 1736, he
wrote “Stella, Sive Amores, Tres Libri,
” and “Six Pastorals,
” none of which he thought it proper to include in
his published works. In his poem, entitled “Sickness,
”
he laments the want of a mother’s tenderness, and a father’s care; but, as they died in advanced age, he could not

carry it on, and complete the noble design of the author.

press his “Viearia Leodiensis: or, The History of the

”, which was published in However diligent he was in cultivating the
laudable accomplishments of the gentleman and the scholar, yet he never suffered his beloved studies to interfere
with his religion, but managed all his affairs in subserviency to it. He often lamented the great consumption
of time, occasioned by the numerous visitants to see his
museum, but took care that they should not hinder his private or public worship. In his principles, after his conversion, he was orthodox; in his affections, catholic, comprehending therein all denominations of Christians. He
was modest and pure, temperate, and abstemious to an uncommon degree; though, being one of the lords of the
manor, and a governing member 'of the corporation, he
could not always avoid public meetings and festivities, yet
he was a sparing partaker, even of innocent diversions.
He was constant and regular at his private devotions, which
were invigorated with an unusual degree of fervency. Ex
emplary in the government of his family, he called them
together morning and evening to prayer, and reading the
Scriptures. Extremely careful of the religious instruction
of his children, he was not unmindful of the moral behaviour of his servants. He was a kind relation, compromising the distressed affairs of some that were very near to
him, by expensive journeys, irksome applications, and
money almost beyond his abilities. He was very charitable
to the utmost of his power, not seldom solicited others, and
was always a faithful dispenser of whatever was entrusted
to his care.

from which, Dr. Walker says, he was kept out “by the
oppressions of the times;
” but there was also somewhat of
court-intrigue in this affair, as related in Walter Pope’s
life of bishop Ward. He tells us, that upon the death of
the latter, the fellows of the college assembled to choose
a new master. “Mr. Seth Ward, with nine of them, gave
their suffrages for Mr. Thorndike of Trinity-college; for
Mr. Minshull there were eight votes including his own.
But while they were at the election, a band of soldiers
rushed in upon them, and forcibly carried away Mr. Parsons, one of those fellows who voted for Mr. Thorndike,
so that the number of suffrages for Mr. Minshull, his own
being accounted for one, was equal to those Mr. Thorndike
had. Upon which Mr. Minshull was admitted master, the
other eight only protesting against it, being ill-advised,
for they should have adhered to their votes. Two of them,
whereof Mr. Ward was one, went to Oxford, and brought
thence a mandamus from the king, commanding Mr. Minshull, and the fellows of Sidney-college, to repair thither,
and give an account of their proceedings as to that election. This mandamus, or peremptory summons, was fixed
upon the chapel-door by Mr. Linnet, who was afterwards
a fellow of Trinity-college, but at that time attended on
Mr. Thorndike. On the other side, one Mr. Bertie, a
kinsman of the earl of Lindsey, being one of those who
voted for Mr. Minshull, was also sent to Oxford on his
behalf. This gentleman, by the assistance and mediation
of my lord of Lindsey, procured an order from the king to
confirm Mr. Minshull’s election; but he, not thinking this
title sufficient, did corroborate it with the broad seal, to
which Mr. Thorndike consented, Mr. Minshull paying him
and the rest of the fellows the charges they had been at
in the management of that affair,amounting to about an
hundred pounds.
” This was therefore evidently a matter
in which “the oppressions of the times
” (which are usually understood to mean those which arose from the usurpation)
were not concerned. He was, however, afterwards, to
experience the latter also, and was ejected from his living
of Barley, which was given to the rev. Nath. Ball of King’s
college, Cambridge, who, Calamy informs us, punctually
paid a fifth part of the income to Mr. Thorndike. At the
restoration he was replaced in this living, but resigned it
on being made a prebendary of Westminster. He very
much assisted Dr. Walton in the edition of the Polyglot
Bible, particularly in marking the variations in the Syriac
version of the Old Testament; and wrote several treatises:

By a letter from chancellor Hyde, in the appendix to Dr.
Barwick’s Life, it would appear that this work had given
offence, as being unseasonable and injudicious. Hyde says,
“Pray tell me, what melancholy hath possessed poor Mr.
Thorndike? And what do our friends think of his book?
And is it possible that he would publish it, without ever
imparting it, or communicating with them? His name and
reputation in learning is too much made use of, to the discountenance of the poor church; and though it might not
be in his power to be without some doubts and scruples, I
do not know what impulsion of conscience there could be
to publish those doubts to the world, in a time when he
might reasonably believe the worst use would be made,
and the greatest scandal proceed from them.
” This seems
to allude to some opinions he held that were unfavourable
to the measures of the court: and we find that there was
some difficulty in admitting him into the convocation in
1661, “on account of his speaking much of the Bohemian
churches, called Unitas Fratrum.
” He was a member of
the Savoy conference, and in the little he said completely
undeceived the non-conformists, who, from his early publications, had supposed he was of their side. There was
also a suspicion that he had a little too much leaning to
the church of Rome, so that his character has not descended to us with all the evidences of consistency; but
that he was a man of great learning, and an able oriental
scholar, seems indisputable.

As a scholar lord Thurlow possessed more knowledge than the world gave him credit for, and his profound acquaintance with the Greek language is testified in a dedication to him by his friend Dr. Horsley. In early life, he lived much with men of gaiety and wit, and always preserved a high respect for literary merit. In his latter years, he would not probably have defended the laxity in which much of his time had been spent. He never was married, but left three daughters by a lady with whom he had long lived. He was, agreeably to the terms of his second peerage, succeeded by his nephew Edward, eldest son of Thomas Thurlow, late bishop of Durham, who died in 179 1.

His education under Sebastiano Zuccati, of Trevigi, and
afterwards under Giovanni Bellini, rendered him a diligent
and subtle observer of every object that strikes the senses:
so that when at a inaturer age he entered into a competition of finish with Albert Durer, and painted at Ferrara the
picture of “Christ with the tribute-mon^y,
” now at Dresden, he excelled, in nicety of penciling, that master of
minuteness; with this difference of result, that though the
hairs on the heads and hands of his figures might be counted, though every pore of the flesh was discriminated, and
the objects reflected in the pupils of the eyes, the effect of
the whole was not diminished, but seemed to gain more
breath and grandeur by distance. To this work, however,
he made no companion, and at an early period appears to
have adopted that freer and less anxious method found by
Giorgioue, his. fellow-scholar first, and then his rival. Some
portraits painted by Titian during that short period cannot be distinguished from those of Giorgione himself; but
he soon found a new style, perhaps less vapoury, not so
fiery nor so grand; but sweeter a style which ravishes
the beholder less by the novelty of its effect than by a
genuine representation of truth. The first work of this
style, all his own, is the “Archangel Raphael leading Tobiah, in the sacristy of S. Marziale,
” painted in his thirtieth
year; and the “Presentation of the Virgin
” at the Carita,
one of his richest and most numerous compositions remaining (for many perished by fire), is said by Ridolft to have
followed it at a very short interval.

held the lay-fellowship founded for a civilian. He was
early in life sent envoy extraordinary to the court of Copenhagen, where he died Feb. 1768, after a long residence,
very highly esteemed on account of his many amiable
qualilies. Of his productions as an author, which were rather
little elegant trifles than elaborate performances, a good
specimen may be seen in his celebrated “Imitation of
Horace,*' book IV. Ode 2. And some of his Latin \erses
are in the
” Reliquiae. Galeanae.“He bequeathed iOOo/.

which was to be applied to the public buildings. This sum
in 1768, when sir James Marriot, master of Trinity-hall,

which a plan was engraved to solicit a further aid from contributions, but failed of success. It would have given us
pleasure to have given more particular memoirs of this ingenious gentleman, of whom so little has yet been said.

” a very ingenious young man,
at first secretary to the embassy at Turin, afterwards for

Dec. 23, 1678; and proceeding M. A. July 2, 1679, became chaplain to Dr. Smith, bishop of Carlisle. He was appointed one of the four canon residentiaries of Carlisle, in
1635; and the same year obtained the vicarage of Stanwix, which he resigned in 1688. He accumulated the degrees of B. and D. D. Dec. 12, 1692. By a petition presented to the House of Commons by Dr. Todd, requesting
to be heard by counsel before the bill “to dvoid doubts
and questions touching statutes, &c.
” should pass, it appears that “the bishop of Carlisle (Dr. Nicolson) had cited
the dean and chapter before him in his visitation held at
Carlisle in September 1707, and exhibited articles tof inquiry against them; and the petitioner appeared, and
entered his protest against the bishop’s power, being informed, the right of local visitor was in the crown; but the
said bishop, in an illegal manner, suspended the petitioner
ab officio et beneficio, and afterwards excommunicated him.
”
The apprehensions of Dr. Todd were, that, if the bill should
pass, it would “subject him to further inquiries and arbitrary censures of the bishop in his visitations.
” The bill
passed the Commons, with some amendments, March 17,
and received the royal assent March 20, 1708. He resigned his residentiaryship in 1720, which was then given
to Dr. Tullie, and died vicar of Penrith in 1728. He was
also rector of Arthuret at the time of his death. His publications are, “The description of Sweden,

Ireland, made no less noise there than it had made in
England; and the clamour wa much increased when he
went thither himself in 1697. Many particulars concerning
this affair are related in the correspondence hetween Mr.
Locke and Mr. Molyneux, which will serve also to illustrate
the temper and character of Toland himself, who was certainly a very extraordinary man. In a letter, dated Dublin,
April the 6th, 1697, Mr. Molyneux writes thus to Mr.
Locke: “In my last to you, there was a passage relating
to the author of * Christianity not mysterious.' I did not
then think that he was so near me as within the bounds of
this city; but I find since that he is corne over hither, and
have bad the favour of a visit from him. I now understand, as I intimated to you, that he was born in this country; but that he hath been a great while abroad, and his
education was for some time under the great Le Clerc.
But that for which I can never honour him too much, is his
acquaintance and friendship to you, and the respect which
on all occasions he expresses for you. I propose a great
deal of satisfaction in his conversation: I take him to be a
candid free thinker, and a good scholar. But there is a
violent sort of spirit that reigns here, which begins already
to shew itself against him; and, I believe, will increase
daily; for I 6nd the clergy alarmed to a mighty degree
against him; and last Sunday he had his welcome to this
city, by hearing himself harangued against out of the
pulpit, by a prelate of this country.
” In a letter, dated
May the 3d, Mr. Locke replies to Mr. Molyneux: “I am
glad to hear that the gentleman does me the favour to
speak well of me on that side the water; I never deserved
*tfoer of him, but that he should always have done so on
this. If his exceeding great value of himself do not deprive the world of that usefulness that his parts, if rightly
conducted, might be of, I shall be very glad. I always
value men of parts and learning, and I think I cannot do too
much in procuring them friends and assistance: but there
may happen occasions that may make one stop one’s
hand; and it is the hopes young men give, of what use they
will make of their parts, which is to me the encouragement
of being concerned for them: but if vanity increases with
age, I always fear, whither it will lead a man. I say this to
you, because you are my friend, for whom I have no reserves, and think 1 ought to talk freely, where you inquire,
and possibly may be concerned; but I say it to you alone,
and desire it may go no farther. For the man I wish very
well, and could give you, if it needed, proofs that I do so,
and therefore I desire you to be kind to him; but I must
leave it to your prudence in what way, and how far. If his
carriage with you gives you the promises of a steady useful
man, I know you will be forward enough of yourself, and
I shall be very glad of it; for it will be his fault alone, if he
prove not a very valuable man, and have not you for his
friend.
” Mr. Molyneux thanks Mr. Locke for these hints
concerning Mr. Toland, in a letter -dated May the 27th,
and says, that “they perfectly agree with the apprehensions he had conceived of him. Truly,
” says he, “to be
free, I do not think his management, since he came into
this city, has been so prudent. He has raised against him
the clamours of all parties; and this not so much by his
difference of opinion, as by his unseasonable way of discoursing, propagating, and maintaining it. Coffee-houses
and public tables are not proper places for serious discourses, relating to the most important truths: but when
also a tincture of vanity appears in the whole cours.e of a
man’s conversation, it disgusts many that may otherwise
have a due value for his parts and learning.-. Mr. ToJand also takes here a great liberty on all occasions, to
vouch your patronage and friendship, which makes many,
that rail at him, rail also at you. I believe you will not approve of this, as far as I am able to judge, by your shaking
him off, in your letter to the bishop of Worcester.
” The
reader is requested to keep in mind these early discoveries
of Toland’s vanity. They unfold his whole character.
Vanity was predominant with him from first to last; and if
the lives of other infidels are examined with Care, from
Toland to the last garbler of Toland in our own days, it will
be found that vanity was the ruling passion, and the inspirer
of those paradoxical opinions which they maintained with
obstinacy even when, it is to be feared, they did not believe
them themselves. It is with good reason, and certainly
with shrewdness and ability, that in a late ingenious work,
the life of Toland is sketched as an instance of one of the
“victims of immoderate vanity .
”

studied Greek at Florence, and made such progress, that
be became able to explain Aristotle in the original language. For this purpose he was invited to Padua in 1497.
He was brought up to the church, and taught the learned
languages at Venice, but in 1520 he returned to Padua,
where he gave instructions to cardinal Pole. He was much
attached to the Platonic philosophy, and passed his time
remote from worldly pursuits, and solely intent upon his
studies. Bembo, Jovius, and others, speak of him with
great esteem, and Erasmus mentions him with honour, as
a man equally respectable for the purity of his morals and
the profundity of his erudition. He died in 1531, and was
buried in the church of St. Francis, at Padua. He translated several of the works of Aristotle, Proclus’s Commentary on the Timaeus of Plato, and other treatises of the
ancient philosophers. He wrote ten dialogues on subjects,
philosophical and moral, a work “De Varia Historia,
” and
some Italian poems.
cquaintance with the literature of ancient Greece and Rome, which is necessary to constitute a great scholar, in the ordinary acceptation of the term. He was familiar with
"Mr. Tooke was possessed of considerable learning, as indeed his writings sufficiently show. To other more casual acquirements he united a very extensive acquaintance with the Gothic dialects, of which he has so copiously and so judiciously availed himself in his etymological researches; and it seems probable that the leading ideas of his philosophical work first presented themselves to his mind whilst he was pursuing this comparatively unfrequented track of literature. He was extremely well versed in the law, a science, which both in theory and practice was particularly congenial to his mind, and which he had once studied with professional accuracy in the hope of being called to the bar. We are unable to state with precision what was the amount of his attainments in classical learning, but we apprehend he by no means possessed that accurate acquaintance with the literature of ancient Greece and Rome, which is necessary to constitute a great scholar, in the ordinary acceptation of the term. He was familiar with all our best writers, most so with those of an early date. His knowledge of modern languages was considerable, and he was particularly well read in Italian authors. On the whole, exclusively of philosophy and politics, he would have passed for a very accomplished man.
, who were better qualified, than Torelli, for preparing a correct edition of Archimedes. As a Greek scholar he was capable of correcting the mistakes, supplying the defects,
But these pursuits he considered merely as amusements;
mathematics and the belles lettres were his serious studies.
These studies are in general thought incompatible; but
Torelli was one of the few who could combine the gravity
of the mathematician with the amenity of the muses and
graces. Of his progress in mathematics we have a sufficient proof in his edition of the collected works of Archimedes, printed at Oxford in 1792, folio, Greek and Latin.
The preparation of this work had been the labour of most
part of his life. Having been completely ready for publication, and even the diagrams cut which were to accompany the demonstration, the manuscript was disposed of
after his death to the curators of the Clarendon press, by
whose order it was printed under the immediate care of
Dr. Robertson, the present very learned professor of astronomy. It seems to be the general opinion that there have
been few persons in any country, or in any period of time,
who were better qualified, than Torelli, for preparing a correct edition of Archimedes. As a Greek scholar he was
capable of correcting the mistakes, supplying the defects,
and illustrating the obscure passages that occurred in treatises originally written in the Greek tongue; his knowledge
of Latin, and a facility, acquired by habit, of writing in
this language, rendered him a fit person to translate the
Greek into pure and correct Latin, and his comprehensive
acquaintance with mathematics and philosophy qualified
him for conducting the whole with judgment and accuracy.
Torelli wrote the Italian language with the classic elegance of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, as appears
by his different works in that language, both in prose and
verse. He translated the whole of jtsop’s fables into Latin, and Theocritus, the epithalamium of Catullus, and the
comedy of Plautus, called “Pseudolus,
” into Italian verse.
The first two books of the Æneid were also translated by
him with great exactness, and much in the style of the
original. Among his other Italian tanslations was Gray’s
Elegy.

there, but completed his studies in Denmark. Here he
became so well known for his acquaintance with history,
that when Frederick III. king of Denmark, himself a very

was recommended to him, and executed his task so much
to the king’s satisfaction, that he retained him for several
years in his court, and employed him on other affairs that
had no connexion with his studies, and always admired
him as a man of talent and probity. As a reward he gave
him a valuable appointment in the customs, but Torfseus
found it not very agreeable to one of his disposition, and
was about soliciting an exchange when the king died. His
successor and son, Christian V. appointed him his historiographer for Norway, with a salary of 600 German crowns.
This enabled Torfaeus to reside either at Copenhagen, or
at an estate he had in Stongeland, pursuing his researches
into history and antiquities. He died in 1719, or 1720,
nearly eighty years old. As an historian, he occupies a
very high rank among his countrymen. His principal
works, or those best known, although all are scarce, are,

an illustrious mathematician and philosopher of Italy, was born at Faenza, in 1608,
and was trained in Greek and Latin literature by an uncle
who was a monk, Natural inclination led him to cultivate
mathematical knowledge, which he pursued some time
without a master; but, at about twenty years of age, he
went to Rome, where he continued the pursuit of it under
father Benedict Castelli. Castelli had been a scholar of
the great Galilei, and had been called by pope Urban VIII.
to be a professor of mathematics at Rome. Torricelli
made so extraordinary a progress under this master, that,
having read Galilei’s “Dialogues,
” he composed a “Treatise concerning Motion
” upon his principles. Castelli,
astonished at the performance, carried it and read it to
Galilei, who heard it with much pleasure, and conceived
a high esteem and friendship for the author. Upon this
Castelli proposed to Galilei, that Torricelli should come
and live with him; recommending him as the most proper
person he could have, since he was the most capable of
comprehending those sublime speculations which his own
great age, infirmities, and, above all, want of sight, prevented him from giving to the world. Galilei accepted the
proposal, and Torricelli the employment, as things of all
others the most advantageous to each. Galilei was at Florence, whither Torricelli arrived in 1641, and began to
take down what Galilei dictated, to regulate his papers,
and to act in every respect according to his directions. But
he did not enjoy the advantages of this situation long, for
at the end of three months Galilei died. Torricelli was
then about returning to Rome. But the grand duke Ferdinand II. engaged him to continue at Florence, making
him his own mathematician for the present, and promising
him the chair as soon as it should be vacant. Here he applied himself intensely to the study of mathematics, physics, and astronomy, making many improvements and some
discoveries. Among others, he greatly improved the art
of making microscopes and telescopes; and it is generally
acknowledged that he first found out the method of ascertaining the weight of the atmosphere by a proportionate
column of quicksilver, the barometer being called from him
the Torricellian tube, and Torricellian experiment. In
short, great things were expected from him, and great
things would probably have been farther performed by him
if he had lived; but he died, after a few days illness, in
1647, when he was but just entered the fortieth year of his
age.

Mr. Toup’s next work was the “Appendiculum notarum

” He closed his labours in

” which places his fame
as a critic, on an imperishable basis. Indeed as a writer
of profound learning, and singular critical sagacity, Mr.
Toup must be acknowledged to rank wirli the most eminent
men, in those departments. Dr. Buruey, uhose right to
judge cannot easily be disputed, place* him as one of the
seven pre-eminent scholars who were the critical luminaries
of the eighteenth century.
As his life was passed in literary retirement, his personal
character was known to few. Hrefailings seem principally
confined to his works, in which we are often led to lament
an excess of conceit, and a petulant manner of noticing his
contemporaries. He censured too freely, and praised too
sparingly. In private life he was a kind neighbour, an indulgent master, and an affectionate and tender relation.
He was a man, too, of great humanity, which he delighted
to extend to the brute creation. We may suppose he also
carefully attended to his duties as a parish priest, for, of all
things, he expressed the greatest aversion to non-residence,
and rejected every proposal to quit his situation upon such
terms. Mr. Toup died Jan. 19, 1785, in the seventy-second year of his age, and was buried under the communion
table in his church of St. Martin. He bequeathed his property to a half-sister, a widow, and her daughters, who
lived with him. It was one of his whims, in his latter writings to call himself Joannes, instead of Jonathan Toup.

, a political and miscellaneous writer, was born in Southwark, March 31, 1737, where his father was a dealer in second-hand books, the easy access to which gave his son a taste for reading, and enabled him at an early period of life to accumulate a fund of useful knowledge. He appears to have had no regular education, for when scarcely twelve years old, he was placed, as an errand boy, in the shop of a stationer under the Royal Exchange. With him he remained some years, until in 3754, he was bound apprentice to Mr. Robert Goadby, printer at Sherborne in Dorsetshire. During his first years here, he applied at his leisure hours to the Latin and Greek languages, and acquired a competent knowledge of both, and by carefully perusing the best books in other branches of learning, he very successfully supplied the want of a regular education, although he never could be reckoned a profound scholar in any pursuit.

His paternal grandmother was heiress of the house of Widdrington. He was born in the house of his ancestors October 1, 1737; and succeeded to the family estate, by the premature death of his father, in 1742. This event, united with religious considerations, sent him in early childhood to France for education; to which, however, much more attention was paid than is usual in the seminaries of that couutry. At a tetter period he was committed to the care of Turbervile Needham, a man of considerable reputation at that time upon the Continent as a natural philosopher. His own native taste and activity of mind carried him far beyond his companions in classical attainments; and a graceful person easily adapted itself to all the forms of polished address, which are systematically taught in France. Thus accomplished he came out into the world, and was eagerly received into the first circles of gaiety and fashion, from the dissipations of which it would be vain to say that he wholly escaped. These habits of life, however, in which imbecility grows old without the power, and vanity without the will, to change, after having tried them for a few years, his vigorous and independent mind shook off at once; and by one of those decisive efforts of which it was always capable, he withdrew to the Continent, resumed his literary pursuits, studied with critical exactness the works and principles of ancient art, and gradually became one of the first connoisseurs in Europe. During this period of his life he principally resided at Rome; from whence, ki different excursions, he visited the remotest parts of Magna Graecia and Sicily. He has been heard to relate, that on arriving at Syracuse, after a long and fatiguing journey, he could take neither rest nor refreshment till he had visited the fountain of Arethusa. This, though a trifling, is a characteristic circumstance; for he never spared himself, nor ever desisted from any pursuit, till he had either obtained his object or completely exhausted his strength^

Our author’s father, the rev. Joseph Trapp, rector of Cherrington in Gloucestershire, was a master of arts, and had formerly been student of Christ-church, Oxford, and was inducted into Cherrington in 1662, where he was buried Sept. 24, 1698, with a Latin inscription, immediately over his grave, in the North chancel. His son, the subject of the present account, was born, probably in November, as he was baptised on the sixteenth of that month, 1679. After some education at home under his father, he was removed to the care of the master of New-collegeschool, Oxford, and became so good a scholar, that in 1695, at sixteen years of age, he was entered a commoner of Wadham-college, and, in 1696, was admitted a scholar of the same house. In 1702, he proceeded master of arts, and in 1704, was chosen a fellow. In 1708, he was appointed the first professor of poetry, on the foundation of Dr. Birkhead, sometime fellow of All-Souls-college, and continued in the same for ten years, the period allotted by the founder. In 1709-10, he acted as a manager for Dr. Sacheverell on his memorable trial; and in 1711, was appointed chaplain to sir Constantine Phipps, lord chancellor of Ireland, and one of the lords justices of that kingdom.

because his silence, moderation, and prudence made it impossible for any one to discover the influence he had, from
his conversation, or conduct; a circumstance almost peculiar to him. He was too wise a man to increase the envy,
which naturally attends power, by an insolent and haughty
behaviour; and too good a man to encourage any one with
false hopes. For he was as cautious in making promises,
as he was just in performing them; and always endeavoured
to soften the disappointments of those he could not gratify,
by the good-nature and humanity, with which he treated

He began his medical studies at Padua, and went afterwards to Bologna, where he became so distinguished for
his knowledge of the Greek language, that the professors
of the university would often consult him on difficult passages, and he was honoured by the name of the “Greek
scholar.
” After remaining seven years at Bologna, he returned to Padua to take his doctor’s degree, and then to
Venice, where, his character preceding him, he was appointed successor to Sebastian Fuscareni in the chair of
philosophy. His time was tehn divided between his lectures, his private studies, and his practice as a physician.
The latter was so extensive as to bring him annually about
three thousand crowns of gold. In 1551 he was appointed
successor to John Baptist Monti, in the medical professorship at Padua, and exchanged the profits of his practice for
a salary of 950 crowns, which the senate afterwards increased to 1600. While professor here, he was the first
who lectured on Hippocrates in the original language.
Finding the infirmities of age approach, he resigned his
office, and returned to Venice, where he died in 1568, in
the seventy-second year of his age.

to East Hampsted, where he died December 14, 1716, and
was buried in East Hampsted church. It was in this retirement that, in 1705, he became acquainted with Pope ,
who then lived at Binfield. Pope informed Mr. Spence,
that he “loved very much to read and talk of the classics
in his retirement. We used to take a ride out together
three or four days in the week, and at last almost every
day.
” His letters to Pope breathe'an air of uncommon good
temper, good sense, candour, and tranquillity of mind.
They evince the scholar, the man of taste, and the gentleman, mixed with the clearest sense of propriety. It appears that sir William was the very first person that urged
Pope to undertake a translation of the Iliad. Besides these
letters in Pope’s Works, several written by him while he
was ambassador in France, are preserved in the paperoffice, and extracts from others have been printed by sir
John Dalrymple. His well-written character of air William Dolben, archbishop of York, we have already given in
our account of that prelate. We ought not to omit, that
he had been a friend and patron to Dryden, who, in the
postscript to his Virgil, pays him a very elegant compliment: "If the last Æneid shine among its fellows, it is.
owing to the commands of sir William Trumbull, one of
the principal secretaries of state, who recommended it as
his favourite to my care; and for his sake particularly I
have made it mine. For who would confess weariness when
he. enjoined a fresh labour? I could not but invoke the
assistance of a muse for this last office:

He was a natural son of a gentleman named Tunstall or Tonstal, by a lady of the Conyers family. He became a student at Baliol college, Oxford, about 1491, but, on the plague breaking out, went to Cambridge, where he became a fellow of King’s hall, now part of Trinity college. After having for some time prosecuted his studies there, he went to the university of Padua, which was then in high reputation, studied along with Latimer, and took the degree of doctor of laws. According to Godwin, he was by this time a man of extensive learning, a good Hebrew and Greek scholar, an able lawyer and divine, a good rhetorician, and skilled in various branches of the mathematics. These accomplishments, on his return, recommended him to the patronage of archbishop Warham, who constituted him vicar-general or chancellor, in August 1511. The archbishop also recommended him to Henry VIII. and in December of the same year, collated him to the rectory of Harrow-on-the hill, Middlesex; which he held till 1522.

Turbervile was a sdnnetteer of great note in his time, although, except Harrington, his contemporaries and successors appear to have been sparing of their praises. It is
probably to some adverse critics that he alludes, in his address to Sycophants. Gascoigne also used to complain of
the Zoilus’s of his time. There is a considerable diversity
of fancy and sentiment in Turbervile’s pieces: the verses
in praise of the countess of Warwick are ingenipusly imagined, and perhaps in his best style, and his satirical effusions, if occasionally flat and vulgar, are characteristic of
his age. Many of his allusions, as was then the fashion,
are taken from the amusement of hawking, and these and
his occasional strokes on large noses, and other personal
redundancies or defects, descended afterwards to Shakspeare, and other dramatic writers. He entitles his pieces
Epitaphs and Epigrams, Songs and Sonnets, but the reader
will seldom recognize the legitimate characteristics of those
species of poetry. His epitaphs are without pathetic reflection, being stuffed with common-place railing against
“the cursed cruelty
” of death; and his epigrams are often
conceits without point, or, in some instances, the point is
placed first, and the conclusion left “lame and impotent.

On the 5th of July, 1785, presently after supper, he received a sudden and unexpected paralytic strokej which in a few hours deprived him of speech and senses; in which state he lay till the 9th of July, being the day on which he had accomplished fifty-two years and eleven months. By his will he ordered his coins, medals, books, and prints, to be sold by auction (which was done from the llth of January to the 18th of February, 1786, inclusive) the produce to be added to the principal part of his estate, which his industry and extreme frugality had increased to a considerable fortune, the interest of which he bequeathed to his widow for her life; and after her to a female cousin of the same condition; the ultimate reversion equally amongst the children of his brother. Few of his survivors understood better the rare secret of collecting only what was truly valuable; a circumstance which invincible modesty alone prevented from being more generally known. To those who were favoured with his intimacy his treasures and his judicious communications were regularly open. His select and valuable library was remarkable for the neatness of the copies; and many of the books were improved by notes written in his own small but elegant hand-writing.

of Yorkshire, under the superintendance of the Rev. Matthew Raine (father of the late learned Dr. Raine, of the Charter-house), who early discovered those rare endowments which were shortly to win high distinction, and were
cherished by him with a kind solicitude, and treated with
no common skill. Previously to his commencing residence
at the university of Cambridge he spent some time under
the immediate tuition of the Rev. Dr. Samuel Parr, whose
pre-eminent learning opened not its stores in vain to an ardent and capacious mind; and whose truly affectionate regard for his pupil spared no pains to perfect him in all the
learning of Greece and Rome; nor is it too much to say,
that the tutor saw his pains requited, and gloried in his
charge; whilst he secured the grateful respect and lasting

in 1763. He became rector of White Notley, Essex, in
private patronage, 1788, and of St. Mary’s, Colchester, to
which he was presented by the bishop of London, on the
death of Philip Morant, 1770. He died Aug. 6, 1804, in
the seventieth year of his age. Sound learning, polite
literature, and exquisite taste in all the fine arts, lost an
ornament and defender in the death of this scholar and
worthy divine. His translation of the “Poetics of Aristotle
” must convince men of learning of his knowledge of the
Greek language, of the wide extent of his classical erudition, of his acute and fair spirit of criticism, and, above
all, of his good taste, sound judgment, and general reading manifested in his dissertations. Besides his familiar
acquaintance with the Greek and Roman classics, his knowledge of modern languages, particularly French and Italian,
was such as not only to enable him to read but to write
those languages with facility and idiomatic accuracy. His
conversation and letters, when science and serious subjects
were out of the question, were replete with wit, humour,
and playfulness. In the performance of his ecclesiastical
duties Mr. T. was exemplary, scarcely allowing himself to
be absent from his parishioners more than a fortnight in a
year, during the last forty years of his life, though, from
his learning, accomplishments, pleasing character, and conversation, no man’s company was so much sought. During the last 12 or 14 years of his life he was a widower,
and has left no progeny. His preferment in the church was
inadequate to his learning, piety, and talents; but such
was the moderation of his desires, that he neither solicited
nor complained. The Colchester living was conferred upon
him by Dr. Lowth, bishop of London, very much to his
honour, without personal acquaintance or powerful recommendation; but, from the modesty of his character, and
love of a private life, his profound learning and literary abilities were little known till the publication of his
Aristotle.

was the grandson of sir Brian Twyne, of Long Parish, in
Hampshire, knight, and was born at Bolingdon, in the
same county. He was educated at New Inn hall, Oxford,
and admitted to the reading of the institutions in 1524, at
a time when that society could boast of many excellent civilians. After he left the university he was appointed head
master of the free-school at Canterbury, and in 1553 rose
to be mayor of the city, in the time of Wyat’s rebellion.
By the school he became so rich as to be able to purchase
lands at Preston and Hardacre, in Kent, which he left to
his posterity. He was a good Greek and Latin scholar, and
devoted much of his time to the study of history and antiquities. He was held in great esteem by men able to judge
of his talents, particularly by Leland, who introduces him
among the worthies of his time in his “Encomia,
” and by
Camden, who speaks of him in his “Britannia
” as a
learned old man. Holinshed also mentions him as a learned
antiquary, in the first edition of hia “Chronicle;
” but this
notice is for some reason omitted in the edition of 1587.
It is said he was a violent papist, but Tanner has produced
evidence of a charge more disgraceful to his character as
a tutor and magistrate. This appears in a ms. in Bene't
college library, Cambridge, No. CXX. “Anno 1560, Mr.
Twyne, school- master, was ordered to abstain from riot
and drunkenness, and not to intermeddle with any public
office in the town.
” He died in an advanced age, Nov.
24, 1581, and was buried in the chancel of the church of
St. Paul, Canterbury, with an inscription, in which he is
styled armiger. His only publication, which, however,
did not appear until after his death, was his work “De

The first, Lawrence, was a fellow of All Souls college,
and bachelor of civil law, and an ingenious poet, but ventured no farther than some encomiastic verses prefixed to
books. He lived and probably died on his father’s estate
at Hardacre in Kent. He had a brother John, who also
wrote verses prefixed to books; and a third, Thomas, of
whom Wood has given us some farther particulars, although
perhaps they are not very interesting. He was born in
Canterbury, and admitted scholar of Corpus Christi college,
Oxford, in 1560, and probationer fellow in 1564, being
then bachelor of arts. He afterwards proceeded in arts,
and then studied medicine, and in 1581 took his doctor’s
degree, and practised at Lewes in Sussex, under the patronage of Thomas lord Buckhurst. He died in 1613,
aged seventy, and was buried in the chancel of St. Anne’s
church, Lewes. He wrote and translated many tracts, enumerated by Wood, but of very little value. He was an admirer of the mysterious philosophy of John Dee. Among
his other publications tie completed Phaer’s translation of
the Æneid, with Maphaeus’s thirteenth book, in 1583;
translated Lhuyde’s “Breviary of Britayne, &q.;
” and was
editor of his father’s work “De rebus Albionicis,
” which
he dedicated to lord Buckhurst. He also wrote some contemptible rhirnes, then called poetry.

In 1614 he was made Greek reader of his college, in which office he acquitted himself with credit, but about 1623 left college to avoid being involved in some dispute between the president and fellows; because in this affair, Wood informs us, he could not vote on either side without the hazard of expulsion, having entered college on a Surrey scholarship, which, it seems, was irregular. He was afterwards presented to the vicarage of Rye in Sussex by the earl of Dorset, but seldom resided, passing most of his time in Oxford, where he had lodgings in Penverthing or Pennyfarthing street, in the parish of St. Aldate. He lived here in a kind of retirement, being, as Wood says, of a melancholy temper, and wholly given to reading, writing, and contemplation. Laud had a great regard for him, and employed him in drawing up the university statutes, all of which he transcribed with his own hand, and was rewarded with the place of custos archivorum, founded in 1634. He died at his lodging^ in St. Aldate’s, July 4, 1644, aged sixty-five, and was buried in Corpus chapel.

C. he fell into the hands of Lucullus, when that general of the Roman army defeated Mithridates, and seized his dominions; but his captivity was no disadvantage to him, since it procured him.an opportunity of becoming illustrious at Rome, and raising a fortune. This he partly expended in collecting a library of above 30,000 volumes; and it is probably owing to his care in collecting books that the writings of Aristotle have not perished together with innumerable other monuments of antiquity. The fate of that great philosopher’s works, as it is related by Strabo, is very remarkable. He left them, with his school and his other books, to his scholar Theophrastus; and Theophrastus left his library to Neleus, who had been his as well as Aristotle’s scholar. Neleus conveyed his library to Scepsis, a city of Troas, and in his country; and left it to his heirs, who, being illiterate persons, took no other care of it than to keep it shut up close: and when they were informed of the diligence with which the kings of Pergamus, whose subjects they were, sought out for books, they buried those of Neleus under ground. A considerable time after, their descendants took them out of their prison, much damaged, and sold those of Aristotle and Theophrastus to one Apellicon, who caused them to be copied, but with an infinite number of errors. After the death of Apellicon, his library was conveyed from Athens to Rome by Sylla, whose library-keeper permitted Tyrannio, a great admirer of Aristotle, to take the writings of that philosopher; and from him they came into the possession of the public.

Thomas Tyrwhitt, the subject of the present article, the eldest son of Dr. Tyrwhitt, was born March 29, 1730, and had his first education at a school at Kensington, to which he was sent in his sixth year. In 1741 he removed to Eton. Here, as well as afterwards, he manifested the strongest propensities tp literature, at an age when other boys are employed, every moment they can steal from books, in pursuit of pleasure. But Mr. Tyrwhitt, it has been justly said, never was a boy, his calm and contemplative disposition always leading him to manly and scholar-like studies. After a residence of six years at Eton, he was entered of Queen’s college, Oxford, in 1747, and took the degree of bachelor of arts in 1750. He removed to Merton college, in consequence of being elected to a fellowship in 1755, and the following year took his degree of M.A. He remained on his fellowship until 1762, when he left the university, carrying with him an extensive fund of various knowledge, to which he afterwards added by most unwearied application.

In the same year, 177G, he was presented by the college to the rectory of Lambourne, near Ongar, in Essex;
but, it being the first time that the college presented to it,
the family from which it came litigated the legality of the
society’s claim, which, however, after a suit in chancery,
was determined in favour of the college. But when they
threatened another prosecution, Mr. Tyson, who was eager
to settle on his living, as he had an intention 1 of marrying,
injudiciously entered into a composition with the parties,
which, but for the liberality of the college, might have
involved his family in debt. He died of a violent fever.
May 3, 1780, in the fortieth year of his age, and was interred in Lambourne church. He left an infant son, who
died in 1794.
In his early days Mr. Tyson amused himself with sofne
poetical attempts, of which two were published, one “On
the birth of the prince of Wales,
” the other “An Ode on
Peace.
” He was a good classical scholar, and studied
with great success the modern languages, particularly Italian, Spanish, and French. He was also a skilful botanist,
but his principal researches were in history, biography, and
antiquities, which he very ably illustrated both as a draughtsman and engraver. His taste in drawing and painting is
said to have been exquisite. There are several etchings
by his hand, particularly the portrait of archbishop Parker,
taken from an illumination by T. Berg, in a ms. preserved
in the library of Bene't college, and prefixed to Nasmith’s
catalogue of the archbishop’s Mss. Strutt also mentions
the portrait of sir William Paulet; and of Jane Shore,
from an original picture at King’s college, Cambridge. To
these we may add that of Michael Dalton, author of “The
Country Justice,
” Jacob Butler, esq. of Barnwell, Mr.
Cole, and others his private friends. He occasionally corresponded in the Gentleman’s Magazine, but his publications were few, as his career was short. In the Archseologia are two articles by him, a description of an illuminated
picture in a ms. in Beue‘t college, and a letter to Mr.
Gough, with a description and draught of the old drinkinghorn in Bene’t college, called Golclcorne’s horn. His skill
was always liberally bestowed on his friends; and his contributions to works of antiquity, &c. were frequently and readily acknowledged by his learned contemporaries.

, a classical scholar and editor, was the fourth son of a gentleman of Cheshire, and born at Wimslow, in that county, December 10, 1670. He was educated at Eton, and became a fellow of King’s college, Cambridge, where he proceeded B. A. 1697, and M. A. 1701. He afterwards, at the request of Dr. Newborough, the head master, returned to Eton, where he was tutor to the famous sir William Wyndham, and was an assistant teacher at the school. He married the daughter of Mr. Proctor, who kept a boarding-house at Eton, but afterwards removed to Ilminster, in Somersetshire, upon the invitation of several gentlemen of the county, and particularly of the earl Powlett, to whom he was afterwards chaplain, and aii whose sons were under his tuition at Taunton. He remained a few years at Ihninster, and taught the learned languages there till he was elected to the care of the free grammarschool in Taunton: which he conducted with the highest reputation, and raised to be the largest provincial school at that time ever known in England. The number of his pupils amounted to more than 200; and many of them were from the first families in the West of England. He served for many years the church of Bishop’s-Hull, in which parish the school is situated. So early as 1711 he was in possession of the rectory of Brimpton, near Yeovil, in the presentation of the Sydenham family. In 1712 he was presented by sir Philip Sydenham to the rectory of Alonksilver, 14 miles from Taunton. He died August 13, 1749, aged seventy-nine.

Dec. 2, 1529. His education would probably have been
neglected, as his mother and himself were turned out of
doors by the unnatural father, and were in great poverty,
had not some early appearance of talents recommended him
to the notice of a canon of the Lateran, Gentilio Delfini,
who took him under his protection, and instructed him in
classical literature; after which, by this benevolent patron’s
interest, he obtained considerable preferment in the church
of St. John of Lateran. His talents afterwards made him
be taken into the service of the cardinals Ranutius and
Alexander Farnese, who rewarded him liberally; and by
this means an opportunity was afforded him of collecting a
great number of books and ancient manuscripts, and employing them for the benefit of literature. He was in habits of correspondence with the most eminent literary characters of Italy, and he contributed much valuable assistance to the authors of that period. He had attained to
great skill in discovering the antiquity and value of Mss.,
which he seems to have considered as an important secret.
Cardinal Frederic Borromeo, being once in his company,
requested Ursinus to point out from a book that lay before
them, the rules by which he distinguished ancient from
modern manuscripts; but he immediately shut the book,
and turned the discourse. He died at Rome Jan. 18, 1600,
at the age of seventy. He was author of several learned
works, as “De Familiis Romanis;
” and an Appendix to
Ciaconio’s treatise “De Triclinio.
” He also published
notes oti Sallust, Cecsar, Livy, and most of the Roman historians, the writers de Re Rustica, Cicero, &c. He also
caused engravings to be made of a large collection of statues, busts, and other monuments of antiquity, and published them under the title of “Imagines et Elogia Virorum illustrium et eruditorum ex antiquis lapidibus et numismatibus expressa, cum annotationibus Fulvii Ursini.

Mr. Pinkerton, however, says that this work is not to be
depended on, and prefers that of Canini, which is better,
although far from perfect. Ursinus, in order to keep together the books which, with great labour and at vast expence, he had accumulated, bequeathed them to the Vatican. Castalio published a Life of Ursinus, at Rome, 1657,
8vo. In his will, which is appended to this Life, be bequeaths two thousand crowns to Delfini, bishop of Camenuo, probably a near relation of his early patron.

pope Nicholas V. he was favourably received by that pontiff, who settled a handsome pension on him. He now
applied himself to a translation of Thucydides, and on presentino- it to the pope, was rewarded by a gratuity of five
hundred gold crowns, and was recommended to translate
Herodotus, which death prevented him from finishing.
What he had done came into the possession of Alphpnsus,
and was published by Pontanus, but neither of these translations have been thought eminently successful. That of
Thucydides is charged by H. Stephens (who printed it along with his edition of the original (1564) as well as separately) with ignorance, carelessness, and inelegance of
language, and Dr. Hudson repeats the charge. Wesseling
speaks equally unfavourably of his Herodotus, but he apologizes that the ms. whence he translated was imperfect,
and himself overwhelmed with the hostilities of his enemies.
Pope Nicholas, in addition to his other favours, appointed him professor of rhetoric; and he employed his
leisure time in putting the finishing hand to his “Elegantise
lingua: Latino?,
” which, as we already noticed, he began at
Naples, and sent to the king’s secretaries, one of whom
published them without his knowledge. He seems to have
written six more books on this subject, which may possibly
be concealed in some of the libraries of Italy. He also
completed his “Illustrations
” of the New Testament, which
the pope, and many of the cardinals, earnestly solicited him
to circulate, and which Erasmus published in 1504. Valla
attacked the Vulgate Latin version by Jerome, which drew
on him the censure of his antagonists, and occasioned his
notes to be condemned by Paul IV. after the council of
Trent had given its sanction to Jerome’s translation.
Among the bitterest of his antagonists was the celebrated
Poggio, with whom he quarrelled late in life on account
of some criticisms of that eminent scholar. It is difficult
perhaps to say who gave the first provocation, but it is certain that nothing can exceed the intemperate language and
low abuse which passed between them, for 'an account of
which we may refer to Mr. Shepherd’s excellent Life of
Poggio. Another of Valla’s enemies was Morandus of Bologna, who accused him to pope Nicholas V. of misrepresenting Livy. This Valla answered by two “Confutations,

coffin, till his arrival at Rome, where he buried it with great
magnificence in his family vault in the church of Ara cceli.

the schools belonging to the Jesuits in Montpellier, Toulouse, and Auch and died at Toulouse in 1739. He published a volume of poetical “Opuscula

” Praedium Rusticum,“on the subject of a country farm, which,

After he had taken his doctor’s degree he continued to attend Boerhaave’s lectures for about twenty years, and having within this period been himself appointed a professor, his fame and talents brought a vast addition to the number of medical students at Leyden, who came from Germany, France, and England, to what was then the greatest and perhaps the only school of medicine in Europe. Celebrated as the school of Leyden was, however, from the joint labours of Boerhaave and Van Swieten, it was at last disgraced in the person of the latter. His growing reputation excited the envy of some of his contemporaries, who having nothing else to object, took the mean advantage of his being a Roman catholic, and insisting that the law should be put in force, obliged him to resign an office which he had filled with so much credit to the university. Van Swieten submitted to this treatment with dignified contempt, and being now more at leisure, began his great work, his Commentaries on Boerhaave’sAphorisms, the first volume of which was finished, and the second nearly so, when the empress Maria Theresa invited him to her court; and although he felt some reluctance at quitting the studious life he had hitherto led, he could not with propriety reject the offer, and accordingly arrived at Vienna in June 1745. Here he was appointed first physician to the court, with a handsome establishment, and some time after the dignity of baron was conferred upon him. How well he merited these honours, the favourable change effected by him in the state of medical science sufficiently proved. He was now in the prime of life, and perhaps few men in Europe were better qualified, by extent of knowledge, to lay the foundation for a school of medicine. He was not only thoroughly versed in every branch of medicine, in botany, anatomy, surgery, chemistry, &c. but was well acquainted with most of the European languages. He was a good Greek and Latin scholar, and wrote the latter with ease and elegance, and in his lectures was frequently happy in his quotations from the Greek and Latin classics. He was also well versed in all the branches of mathematics, and natural philosophy; and had paid no little attention to divinity, law, politics, and history. Such attainments procured him the confidence of his sovereign, whom he easily prevailed upon to rebuild the university of Vienna in an elegant style, and with every accommodation for the pursuit of the different sciences. The botanical garden was enlarged, and the keeping of it given to M. Langier; and a clinical lecture was established in one of the principal hospitals by M. De Haen. It was in 1746 that Van Swieten first began to execute his plan for reforming the study of medicine in the university of Vienna, by giving lectures in the vestibule of the imperial library; and when his business as first physician increased, he called in the aid of able professors who understood his views; among whom were the celebrated Storck and Crantz. Having been appointed keeper of the imperial library, his first measure was to abolish a barbarous law that had long been in force, which prohibited any person from making notes or extracts from any of the books. Van Swieten, on the contrary, laid the whole open to the use of readers, and provided them with every accommodation, and ample permission to transcribe what they pleased. He also prevailed on the empress to increase the salaries of the professors of the university, and to provide for the education of young men of talents. He was himself a most liberal patron to such as stood in need of this aid, and employed his whole influence in their favour; and he lived to promote the interests of learning in general throughout the Austrian dominions to an extent hitherto unknown.

In 1531 he was appointed regius professor of Hebrew in the university of Paris, one of the royal professorships at that time founded by Francis I. and in this office gained the highest reputation. Among his hearers were many learned Jews, who much admired his lectures, which were all delivered extempore, nor does he appear to have committed any of them to writing. Some of his scholars, however, having taken notes of his observations on the Old Testament, Robert Stephens made a collection of them, which he added to Leo Juda’s version of the Bible, printed at Paris in 1545. Of their accuracy no doubts have been entertained, although Stephens probably might correct what he thought the errors of the transcribers. Yet as a protestant translation was joined to them, the doctors of divinity of the faculty of Paris condemned them, while those of Salamanca, with more liberality, caused Vatablus’s Bible, for such it was called, to be reprinted in Spain with approbation. Stephens wrote a defence of it against the censures of the Parisian divines, who, Dupin allows, were at that time not sufficiently acquainted with the Hebrew language.

After the death of Raphael, which happened in 1520, Veneziano and Marc de Ravenna, his fellow- pupil, who had conjointly assisted each other, separated, and worked entirely upon their own account. When the city of Rome was taken and sacked by the Spaniards in 1527, Veneziano retired to Florence, and applied for employment to Andrea del Sarto, who was then in high repute; but del Sarto, dissatisfied with the dead Christ which he had engraved in 1516, after his design, refused to permit him to engrave any more of his pictures. Veneziano afterwards returned to Rome, where he followed his professional pursuits with great success, and where he died some time about 1540.

Of his preceptors we only know that he learned Greek of Chrysoloras at Venice, and canon law of Francis de Zabarelia at Florence. -He is said to have composed the inscription on the monument of Chrysoloras in the Dominican monastery at Constance, where that eminent scholar died in 1415. After visiting several cities in Italy, where he displayed his knowledge of philosophy, civil law, mathematics, Greek, &c. he assisted at the council of Constance, and went thence to Hungary, to which it was thought he was invited by the emperor Sigismond. The prince of Carrara, then in possession of Padua, chose him for preceptor to his children. He is supposed to have died about 1431; Saxius says 1428. In his last days his faculties experienced a total decay, nor did he appear to have any enjoyment of his reason but at short intervals.

author stopt at Catalonia, and travelled over that and the
neighbouring parts in quest of the remains of Roman antiquities, of which he took copies. He also afterwards continued this research at Rome, when he went there to congratulate Clement VII. on his accession to the popedom.
This pope had been a npbleman of Florence, and of his
own standing. When the revolt took place at Florence
Vettori sided with the republican party, and, during the
prevalence of the Medici family, retired to the country,
and devoted himself to study, with the firm resolution to
meddle no more with public affairs. When the duke
Alexander was killed, and the senators and patricians were
assembled to consider of a new form of government,
they invited Vettori to take part in their deliberations;
but instead of complying, he went to Rome, and left his
discordant and tumultuous countrymen to determine among
themselves whether they would be freemen or slaves. “My
country,
” he used to say, “is in the same situation as Rome
formerly; it will neither tolerate liberty nor slavery. Riches
have produced pride, and pride, ambition. The laws have
no longer any force; every day they are repealing old laws
and making new ones, and no more respect is paid to the
new than to the old. In the present state of my country, I
clearly see that it must have a sovereign, but I will not aid
in giving it a sovereign, for fear of giving it a tyrant.
”

letter or in person pressed him to return to Florence, and
affected even to consider his refusal as criminal. He bad
the wisdom to abandon politics, and dedicate his whole
time and attention to the acquisition of knowledge. And
in such esteem was he held on account of his learning, that
Cosmo I. who could not love him on account of his hostility to the Medici family, yet sent him an invitation to
become Greek and Latin professor in the university of
Florence. This was a noble sacrifice of prejudice on the
part of the duke, and Vettori executed the duties of his
office for more than forty years with the highest reputation,
and formed many distinguished scholars both Italians and
foreigners. Whether we consider the utility of his lectures or his public works, it will appear that literature was
as highly indebted to him as to almost any scholar of his
time. Had he done nothing but collate and correct the
editions of the Greek and Latin authors which had appeared
from the invention of printing to his own time, his labours
would have been of infinite service in that comparatively
dark period; but we are indebted to his industry also for
the collation of avast number of manuscripts, and selecting
the best for the press, in which he shewed great judgment,
and assigned his reasons with critical precision. But his
services did not end even here, for he furnished the learned
world with notes and commentaries, which gave superiority
to many editions of the classics, as various parts of Aristotle’s works, Terence, Varro, Sallust, Euripides, Porphyry, Plato, Xenophon, &c. but of all his editions, that
of Cicero, printed in 1534 37, four vols. folio, has justly
received the encomiums of the literary world ever since his
time. He has been called “Verus Ciceronis sospitator,
”
and Grasvius is of opinion that Cicero is more indebted to
him than to all the other critics and commentators. Besides
these and his “Variae lectiones,
” of which there have been
several editions, and which discover great critical knowledge, he was the author of some Latin poetry and orations,
of letters both in Latin and Italian, and an Italian treatise
on the culture of olives. Men of learning of all countries
were happy in his acquaintance and correspondence, and
princes and other great personages not only attended his
lectures, but expressed their veneration of his talents and
worth, by diplomas, titles, and presents. He died in the
eighty-sixth year of his age, in 1585, and was interred
with great solemnity at the public expence in the church
of the Holy Spirit, where is a marble monument and inscription to his memory. It is said that his private virtues,
as well as his talents, made his death the subject of universal regret.

but never discovered any genius for letters; so that more
regard was had in the course of his education to the accomplishments of a gentleman than those of a scholar. About
eighteen, he travelled into France, where he made himself
familiar with the French language, and with all the exercises of the noblesse; such as fencing and dancing, in
which last he particularly excelled. Soon after his return
to England, which was at the end of three years, his mother, who was a sagacious and enterprising woman, introduced him at court; concluding probably, and not without
good reason, that a young gentleman of his fine person and
accomplishments could not fail of making his fortune under
such a monarch as James I. The king, about March
1614-15, went according to his custom to take his huntingpleasures at Newmarket; and the Cambridge scholars, who
knew the king’s humour, invited him to a play, called “Ignoramus.
” At this play it was contrived, that Viiliers
should appear with every advantage of dress and person;
and the king no sooner cast his eyes upon him than he became confounded with admiration; for, says lord Clarendon, “though he was a prince of more learning and knowledge than any other of that age, and really delighted
more in books and in the conversation of learned men, yet,
of all wise men living, he was the most delighted and taken
with handsome persons and fine cloaths.
” Thus he conceived such a liking to the person of Villiers, that he “resolved, as sir Henry Wotton says, to make him a
masterpiece; and to mould him, as it were, Platonically to his
own idea.

thought with reason that he might be more usefully employed in publishing some valuable work, not before given

He accordingly set out in 1781, under the patronage of the

by the government. His researches were not fruitless. In
that depository, he soon discovered several inedited works
of the rhetoricians and philosophers, and especially grammarians, which he deemed worthy of publication, either entire or in extracts; and these form the celebrated collection
which was printed the same year, in 2 vols. 4to, under the
title of “Anecdota Graeca e regia Parisiensi et e Veneta 8.

” Venice. Of this some copies were taken off“in folio, and two on vellum. It was however unfortunate that publication followed so hastily on discovery, for Villoison soon found, but found too late, that a considerable proportion of the first volume of these

a very important discovery in the library of Mark, of a ms.
of Homer, which he judged to be of the 10th century, and
consequently anterior by two centuries to the commentator
Eustathius. This precious volume, which does not appear
to have been before examined, contained the whole Iliad,
enriched with the scholia of the most eminent grammarians
of antiquity. The margins also were filled with various
marks by which these grammarians distinguished the verses
of Homer, which they judged to be supposititious, corrupted,
or transposed, from those whose genuineness was universally recognized. He immediately prepared an edition of
this valuable treasure, which was published in 1788, fol.

perverting the critical marks affixed to a great number of
verses in the Iliad, in support of the darling position, that
parts of this poem, even entire books, were the work of ancient rhapsodists, and the first editors, &c. and the idea
that he had unintentionally furnished the basis on which
these conjectures were constructed, and the weapons by
which their authors pretended to defend them, troubled him
so much, that he almost repented of having published his
work.“He had advanced but a little way in printing the Iliad,
when he yielded to the invitation of the duke and duchess
of Saxe-Weimar, who honoured him with their particular
esteem, and quitting Venice, repaired to their capital. While
here, he formed the collection of critical letters, printed at
Zurich in 1783, under the title of
” Epistolse Vinarienses,
in quihus multa Graecorum scriptorum ioca emendantur ope
librorum Ducalis bibliothecte,“4to. Having found in the
library of St. Mark a very liberal translation of part of the
Old Testament, made by a Jew in the ninth century, he
laboured, during his stay at Weimar, to put it into a state
fit for publication; and on his return to France in 1784, he
remained some time at Strasburgh for the purpose of having it printed there under his own inspection. He soon after
set out for Greece, in quest of other ancient Mss.; but
after a tour of two years, found nothing of that description.
He had made, however, many observations, and intended,
with the aid of these, to have composed a history of ancient
and modern Greece, For the same purpose he determined
on a fresh perusal of all the Greek and Latin authors extant,
and as Paris had now become the scene of the revolution,

His eldest son, Francis, continued the business of a packer, and prospered in it; and by him William was assisted in his expenses at college. His school education, excepting a mere infantine initiation at Cavendish, in Suffolk, was received entirely at Westminster; and from fourteen years old, when he entered the school, to the day of his death, he was never unconnected with that seminary, nor long personally absent from its precincts, except for the five years in which he was pursuing his academical studies. The place of second master at Westminster schoqi is a situation of much labour and responsibility. Besides the daily business of the school, which, if not arduous, is at least fatiguing, the person who holds that office has the whole care and superintendence of the scholars on the foundation when out of school; that is, of forty boys, rapidly growing up into men, and yearly drafted off, by elections of from eight to ten, to the two universities. Yet in this much occupied situation it was, that Mr. Vincent was prosecuting those studies which gradually established his reputation at home as a scholar, and a man of research; and finally extended his celebrity over the whole continent of Europe. What is much to his honour, he studied under a natural disadvantage, which to a less ardent and persevering spirit would have served as an excuse for idleness. From an early period of life h was subject to a weakness of the eyes, attended with pain and inflammation, which never suffered him to read or write with impunity by artificial light. These attacks were so severe, that, to avoid yet more formidable consequences, he found himself compelled altogether to relinquish evening studies. But zeal can always find resources,. As he could not read at night he formed the habit of rising very early. Before the hours of school, in the intervals between morning and evening attendance, and after both, when the length of the days permitted, he was generally employed in his study. Of exercise, properly so called, he took very little, but his constitution was robust; and of a man who completed seventy-six years, we can hardly say that his days were shortened by his habits of life, of whatever kind they might be.

tends to clear up an almost desperate passage in Livy, was,
with very good judgment, written in Latin, that it might be
submitted not only to domestic but to foreign critics. It is
entitled, “De Legione Manlian&, Quicstio ex Livio desumta, et Rei militaris Romanae studiosis proposita.
” Subjoined to it is what the author has termed * An Explanatory
Translation' in English. Polybius, in his description of the
construction of the Roman legian, has given an account of
it, which seems entirely irreconcileable with what Livy has
said, in the eighth book of his History, of a manoeuvre of
the great general Manlius in the management of his own
army against the Latins. As both authors must have been
perfectly well acquainted with the subject, the difficulty
was to reconcile the difference between them, without supposing a mistake on either side.

He became a member of the university of Oxford in 1593, and in 1598 was elected probationer-fellow of Merton college. In 1604 he was chosen public orator, and in that capacity had frequent opportunities, sometimes before the king and court at their visits to the university, of delivering speeches in a pure and eloquent style. In 1609 he travelled in France and Italy, and after his return was made private secretary to sir Dudley Carleton, one of the chief secretaries of state, and discovering, in this situation, talents which might qualify him for diplomatic commissions, his majesty (James I.) employed him as ambassador to Venice, Savoy, and other courts. Previous to his setting out for Savoy in 1619, he received the order of knighthood. In 1625 he sat as member of parliament for the university of Oxford, and his speeches added considerably to his reputation. His accomplishments likewise, both as a scholar and a gentleman, were greatly admired. He died in 1632, while at Paris, in the service of Charles I. and his body being brought to England, was interred in the chapel at Dover castle. His funeral, which was very magnificent, was expressly at the charge of the king, who had intended him for the place of secretary of state had he lived.

father, the rev. George Wakefield, was then rector. An
uncommon solidity and seriousness of disposition marked
him from infancy, together with a power of application,
and thirst after knowledge, which accelerated his progress
in juvenile studies. At the age of seven he went to the
free school in Nottingham, where the usher, Mr. Beardmore (afterwards master of the Charter-house), threatened
upon one occasion to flog him, which Mr. Wakefield speaks
of with great indignation. At the age of nine, he exchanged this school for that of Wilford near Nottingham,
then under the direction of the rev. Isaac Pickthall, and
afterwards was placed under the tuition of his father’s curate
at Richmond, whom he characterises with great contempt.
At the age of thirteen he was placed under the rev. Richard
Woodeson, at Kingston-upon-Thames, to which parish his
father was then removed; but we are told he was used to
lament that he had not possessed the advantages of an uniform education at one of those public schools which lay a
solid foundation for classical erudition in its most exact
form. About the age of sixteen he was admitted of Jesus
college, Cambridge. Here he resumed his classical studies, but the lectures on algebra and logic were, he tells
us, “odious to him beyond conception;
” and he is perhaps
not far wrong in thinking that “logic and metaphysics are
by no means calculated for early years.

learning in the fourteenth century, was born at Walden in
Essex, about 1367. His father’s name was John Netter,
but he chose to be denominated, as indeed was very
commoil then, from the place of his nativity. He was educated among the Carmelites in London, whence he removed for the farther prosecution of his studies to Oxford.
Here he continued some years, and received the degree of
doctor in divinity, after which he returned to London, and
took the habit of the Carmelites. Being introduced at the
court of Henry IV. he became a favourite with the king,
and was appointed the principal champion of the church
against heretics, and especially those who had adopted the
tenets of Wickliff, Huss, or Jerome of Prague. In 1409
he was sent by the king to the grand council at Pisa, where
he is said to have been much admired for his eloquence and
learning. After his return to England, he was made provincial of his order; and Henry V. admitted him of his
privy-council, and appointed him his confessor. In 1415
he was sent to the council of Constance, and about 1419,
was employed to negociate peace between Uladislaus, king
of Poland, and Michael, general of the Teutonic order.
In 1422 the king died in the arms of Waldensis, at Vincennes in France. He became afterwards a favourite with
the young king Henry VI. and was appointed his confessor.
In 1430 he attended the king to France, and at Roan was
seized with an acute disease, of which he died Nov. 2, and
was buried in the convent of Carmelites in that city. He
appears to have been a man of abilities; Pits says that he
was master of the Greek and Hebrew languages, and in
general a polite scholar. His principal work, the only one

was born at Powick, in Worcestershire, 1708. He was the
son of Mr. John Wall, an opulent tradesman of the city of
Worcester, who served the office of mayor in 1703. He
received the early part of his education at a grammar-school
at Leigh-Sinton, and at the college school of Worcester,
whence he was elected scholar of Worcester-college, Oxford, in June 1726. In 1735, he was elected fellow of
Merton -college, soon after which he took the degree of
bachelor of physic, and removed to the city of Worcester,
where he was many years settled in practice. In 1759, he
took the degree of M. D. Besides an ingenious “Treatise
on the virtues of Malvern-waters,
” which he brought into
reputation, he enriched the repositories of medical knowledge with many valuable tracts, which, since his death,
have been collected into an octavo edition, by his son, the
present learned Dr. Martin Wall, F. R. S. clinical-professor of. the university, and were printed at Oxford in
1780. He married Catherine youngest daughter of Martin
Sandys, esq. of the city of Worcester, barrister at law,
and uncle to the first lord Sandys. Dr. Wall was a man of
extraordinary genius, which he improved by early and indefatigable industry in the pursuit of science; but he was
more particularly eminent in those branches of natural
philosophy which have an immediate connexion with the
arts, and with medicine. He was distinguished likewise
through his whole life by an uncommon sweetness of manners, and cheerfulness of disposition, which, still more
than his great abilities, made his acquaintance courted,
and his conversation sought, by persons of all ranks and
ages. His practice, as a physician, was extended far
beyond the common circle of practitioners in the country,
and he was particularly eminent for benevolence, courtesy,
penetration, and success. His native country still boasts
many monuments of the application of his eminent talents
to her interests. To his distinguished skill in chemistry,
and his assiduous researches (in conjunction with some other chemists) to discover materials proper for the china-ware,
the city of Worcester owes the establishment of its porcelain-manufacture. Besides the improvements he suggested
and put in execution for the accommodation of visitors at
Malvern, it was to his zeal and diligence the county of
Worcester is in no small degree indebted for the advantages
of the infirmary, which he regularly attended during his
whole life. His principal amusement was painting; and
it has been said of him, that, if he had not been one of
the best physicians, he would have been the best painter
of his age. This praise is perhaps too high, yet his designs for the two frontispieces to “Hervey’s Meditations,
”
that for Cambridge’s “Scribleriad,
” and for the East window of the chapel of Oriel-college, Oxford, are very creditable specimens of his talents. He died at Bath, after a
lingering disorder, June 27, 1776, and lies buried in the

treatise on Malvern-waters Dr. Martin Wall has also subjoined an appendix of some length, containing an experimental inquiry into their nature; from which it appears,
that the Holywell-water at Malvern owes its virtues principally to its extreme purity, assisted by the fixed air which
it contains.

grounded in the technical part of grammar, so as to understand the rules and the grounds and reasons of such rules,
with the use of them in such authors, as are usually read
in grammar schools: for it was always my affectation even
from a child, in all parts of learning or knowledge, not
merely to learn by rote, which is soon forgotten, but to
know the grounds or reasons of what I learn, to inform my
judgment as well as furnish my memory, and thereby make
a better impression on both.
” In 1630 he lost this instructor, who was engaged to attend two young gentlemen
on their travels, and would gladly have taken his pupil

of his youth, he was sent to Felsted school in Essex, of
which the learned Mr. Martin Holbeach was then master.
During the Christmas holidays in 1631, he went home to
his mother at Ashford, where finding that one of his brothers had been learning to cypher, he was inquisitive to
know what that meant, and applying diligently was enabled to go through all the rules with success, and prosecuted this study at spare hours on his return to Felsted,
where also he was instructed in the Latin, Greek, and Hebrew tongues, and in the rudiments of logic, music, and
the French language.

Wallis, however, was so highly esteemed by the society, that when he declared his design of leaving the college, Dr. Richard Holdsworth, then master, and the fellows, had a consultation about founding a new fellowship on his account, that he might not remove from them. But the times growing confused, there was no room for executing such a design, and Mr. Wail is removed to Queen’s college in Cambridge, where he was chosen fellow, and continued so, till by his marriage he vacated his fellowship. In Hilary term 1636-7, he took the degree of bachelor of arts, and about four years after that of master; and then removed to Queen’s, probably in consequence of the interest of Dr. Horton, his former tutor, and now master of that college.

knowledge, he lived and died in an humble station. His
disposition was so mild, and his sense of duty so proper,
that he passed through life without a murmur at his lot.
Early in life he married a lady near Portsmouth, where he
at that time resided on a curacy. For fifty-six years they
enjoyed the happiness of their'matrimonial connexion an
happiness that became almost proverbial in their neighbourhood. After spending a few years in the south of England, he became curate of Simonburn, in Northumberland; and while here, indulged his taste for the study of
botany, and filled his little garden with curious plants.
This amusement led him gradually into deeper researches
into natural history; and, in 1769, he published a “History of Northumberland,
” 2 vols. 4to, the first of which,
containing an account of minerals, fossils, &c. found in that
country, is reckoned the most valuable. In other respects,
as to antiquities, &c. it is rather imperfect, and unconnected. His fortune, however, did not improve with the
reputation which this work brought him, and a dispute with
his rector occasioned him to leave his situation, when he
and his wife were received into the family of a clergyman
who had formerly been his friend at college. He was curate for a short time at Haughton, near Darlington, in
1775, and soon afterwards removed to Billingham, near
Stockton, where he continued until increasing infirmities
obliged him to resign. He then removed to the village of
Norton, where he died July 23, 1793, in the seventyninth year of his age. About two years before his death a
small estate fell to him by the death of a brother; and to
the honour of the present bishop of Durham (but certainly not to the surprize of any one that knows that munificent prelate), when the circumstances and situation of Mr. Wallis were represented to him, he allowed him an annual pension from the time of his resigning his curacy. From a
sense of gratitude, Mr. Wallis, just at the close of life, was
employed in packing up an ancient statue of Apollo, found
at Carvoran, a Roman station on the wall, on the confines
of Northumberland, as a present to the learned Daines
Barrington, brother to the bishop. In the earlier part of
his life Mr. Wallis published a volume of letters to a pupil,
on entering into holy orders.

He received the first rudiments of learning at a private seminary at Massingham, in Norfolk, and completed his education on the foundation at Eton, Walpole was naturally indolent, and disliked application, but the emulation of a public seminary, the alternate menaces and praises of his master, Mr. Newborough, the maxim repeatedly inculcated by his father, that he was a younger brother, and that his future fortune in life depended solely upon his own exertions, overcame the original inertness of his disposition. Before he quitted Eton, he had so considerably improved himself in classical literature, as to bear the character of an excellent scholar. In April 1696 he was admitted a scholar of King’s college, Cambridge. On the death of his elder surviving brother in 1698, becoming heir to the paternal estate, he resigned his scholarship. Singular as it may appear, he had been designed for the church; but on his destination being altered by the death of his brother, he no longer continued to prosecute his studies with a view to a liberal profession. His father, indeed, appears to have been in a great measure the cause of this dereliction of his studies, for he took him from the university to his seat at Houghton, where his mornings being engaged in farming, or in the sports of the field, and his evenings in convivial society, he had no leisure, and soon lost the inclination, for literary pursuits. In July 1700, he married Catherine, daughter of sir John Shorter, lord mayor of London, and his father dying, he inherited the family estate of somewhat more than 2000l. a year.

likewise a man of fashion, and, as Dennis remarks, ostentatiously splendid in his dress. He was likewise a member
of parliament and a courtier, knight of the shire for his
native county in several parliaments, in another the re*
presentative of Richmond in Yorkshire, and gentleman of
the horse to queen Anne under the duke of Somerset.
Some of his verses shew him to have been a zealous friend
to the Revolution; but his political ardour did not abate
his reverence or kindness for Dryden, to whom, Dr. Johnson says, he gave a Dissertation on Virgil’s Pastorals; but
this was certainly written by Dr. Chetwood, as appears
by one of Drydeu’s letters. In 1705 he began to correspond with Pope, in whom he discovered very early the
power of poetry, and advised him to study correctness,
which the poets of his time, he said, all neglected. Their
letters are written upon the pastoral comedy of the
Italians, and those pastorals which Pope was then preparing
to publish. The kindnesses which are first experienced
are seldom forgotten. Pope always retained a grateful memory of Walsh’s notice, and mentioned him in one of his
latter pieces among those that had encouraged his juvenile
studies.

which yet had not oppressed his imagination nor clouded
his perspicacity. To every work he brought a memory
full fraught, together with a fancy fertile of original combinations; and at once exerted the powers of the scholar,
the reasoner, and the wit. But his knowledge was too
multifarious to be always exact, and his pursuits were too
eager to be always cautious. His abilities gave him a
haughty consequence, which he disdained to conceal or
mollify; and his impatience of opposition disposed him to
treat his adversaries with such contemptuous superiority
as made his readers commonly his enemies, and excited
against the advocate the wishes of some who favoured the
cause. He seems to have adopted the Roman emperor’s
determination, ‘oderint dum metuant;’ he used no allurements of gentle language, but wished to compel rather
than persuade. His style is copious without selection, and
forcible without neatness; he took the words that presented themselves: his diction is coarse and impure, and
his sentences are unmeasured.

has been often copied, we shall subjoin some remarks from
the able critic of whom we have already borrowed, and whose
opinions seem entitled to great attention.

“Warburton’s whole constitution, bodily as well as mental, seemed to indicate that he was born to be an extraordinary man: with a large and athletic person he prevented
the necessity of such bodily exercises as strong constitutions usually require, by rigid and undeviating abstinence.
The time thus saved was uniformly devoted to study, of
which no measure or continuance ever exhausted his understanding, or checked the natural and lively flow of his
spirits. A change in the object of his pursuit was his only
relaxation; and he could pass and n pass from fathers and
philosophers to Don Quixote, in the original, with perfect
ease and pleasure. In the mind of Warburton the foundation of classical literature had been well laid, yet not so as
to enable him to pursue the science of ancient criticism
with an exactness equal to the extent in which he grasped
it. His master-faculty was reason, and his master-science
was theology; the very outline of which last, as marked out
by this great man, for the direction of young students, surpasses the attainments of many who have the reputation of
considerate divines. One deficiency of his education he
had carefully corrected by cultivating logic with great diligence. That he has sometimes mistaken the sense of his
own citations in Greek, may perhaps be imputed to a purpose of bending them to his own opinions. After all, he
was incomparably the worst critic in his mother tongue.
Little acquainted with old English literature, and as little
with those provincial dialects which yet retain much of the
phraseology of Shakespeare, he has exposed himself to the
derision of far inferior judges by mistaking the sense of
passages, in which he would have been corrected by shepherds and plowmen. His sense of humour, like that of
most men of very vigorous faculties, was strong, but extremely coarse, while the rudeness and vulgarity of his
manners as acontrovertist removed all restraints of decency
or decorum in scattering his jests about him. His taste
seems to have been neither just nor delicate. He had nothing of that intuitive perception of beauty which feels rather than judges, and yet is sure to be followed by the
common suffrage of mankind: on the contrary, his critical
favours were commonly bestowed according to rules and
reasons, and for the most part according to some perverse
and capricious reasons of his own. In short, it may be
adduced as one of those compensations with which Providence is ever observed to balance the excesses and superfluities of its own gifts, that there was not a faculty about
this wonderful man which does not appear to have been
distorted by a certain inexplicable perverseness, in which
pride and love of paradox were blended with the spirit of
subtle and sophistical reasoning. In the lighter exercises
of his faculties it may not unfrequently be doubted whether
he believed himself; in the more serious, however fine-r
spun his theories may have been, he was unquestionably
honest. On the whole, we think it a fair subject of speculation, whether it were desirable that Warburton’s education and early habits should have been those of other great
scholars. That the ordinary forms of scholastic institution
would have been for his own benefit and in some respects
for that of mankind, there can be no doubt. The gradations of an University would, in part, have mortified his
vanity and subdued his arrogance. The perpetual
collisions of kindred and approximating minds, which constitute, perhaps, the great excellence of those illustrious seminaries, would have rounded off‘ some portion of his native asperities; he would have been broken by the academical curb to pace in the trammels of ordinary ratiocination; he would have thought always above, yet not altogether unlike, the rest of mankind. In short, he would
have become precisely what the discipline of a college was
able to make of the man, whom Warburton most resembled,
the great Bentley. Yet all these advantages would have
been acquired at an expence ill to be spared and greatly
to be regretted. The man might have been polished and
the scholar improved, ’but the phenomenon would have
been lost. Mankind might not have learned, for centuries to come, what an untutored mind can do for itself. A
self-taught theologian, untamed by rank and unsubdued by
intercourse with the great, was yet a novelty; and the
manners of a gentleman, the formalities of argument, and
the niceties of composition, would, at least with those who
love the eccentricities of native genius, have been unwillingly accepted in exchange for that glorious extravagance
which dazzles while it is unable to convince, that range
of erudition which would have been cramped by exactness
of research, and that haughty defiance of form and decorum, which, in its rudest transgressions against charity and
manners, never failed to combine the powers of a giant
with the temper of a ruffian.

He was first sent to Christ’s college, Cambridge, where he became a scholar of the house, whence he was, on account of his extraordinary merit, elected into a fellowship at Emmanuel, and succeeded to the mastership of Sidney-Sussex college on Jan. 5, 1609. On April 29, 1615, he was installed archdeacon of Taunton, and was at that time D. D. and prebendary of Bath and Wells. On Feb. 11, 1617, he was promoted to a stall in the metropolitical church of York, where he had the prebend of Ampleford, which he kept to his death. In 1620 he was vice-chancellor of the university, and the year following was made lady Margaret’s professor of divinity. In 1622 he was at Salisbury with bishop Davenant, his intimate and particular friend, with whom, together with bishops Hall and Carleton, he had been sent by king James to the synod of Dort in 1613, as persons best able to defend the doctrine of the Church of England, and to gain it credit and reputation among those to whom they were sent.

, an eminent antiquary, was descended from the ancient family of De Ware, or De Warr in Yorkshire, the only remains of which are, or lately were, in Ireland. His grandfather, Christopher Ware, was an early convert to the protestant religion in the beginning of the reign of queen Elizabeth, and that principally by the arguments and persuasion of Fox, the celebrated martyrologist. His father James, who was liberally educated, was introduced to the court of queen Elizabeth, where he soon because noticed by the ministers of state, and in 1588 was sent to Ireland as secretary to sir William Fitz-Wiiliams, the lord deputy. He had not filled this office long before he was made clerk of the common pleas in the exchequer, and afterwards obtained the reversion of the patent place of auditor general, a valuable appointment, which remained nearly a century in his family, except for a short time during the usurpation; and his income having enabled him to make considerable purchases in the county and city of Dublin, &c. his family may be considered as now removed finally to Ireland. While on a visit ui E;i^l md, James I. bestowed on him the honour of knighthood, and as a particular mark of favour, gave his eldest son the reversion of the office of auditor general. He also sat in the Irish parliament which began May 1613, for the borough of Mallow in the county of Cork. He died suddenly, while walking the street in Dublin, in 1632. By his lady, Mary, sister of sir Ambrose Briden, of Maidstone in Kent, he had five sons and five daughters. His eldest son, the subject of this article, was born in Castlestreet, Dublin, Nov. 26, 1594, and discovering early a love of literature, his father gave him a good classical education as preparatory to his academical studies. In 1610, when sixteen years of age, he was entered a fellow commoner in Trinity college, Dublin, under the immediate tuition of Dr. Anthony Martin, afterwards bishop of Meath, and provost of the college; but his private tutor and chamber-fellow was Dr. Joshua Hoyle, an Oxford scholar, and afterwards professor of divinity. publication was “The Pleasures of Melancholy,
” of which
the first copy differs considerably, particularly in the introductory part, from that published in his collection of
poems. On the appearance of Mason’s “Isis,
” reflecting
on the loyalty of Oxford, which a foolish riot among some
students had brought into question, Mr. Warton, encouraged
by Dr. Huddesford, the president of Trinity, published in
1749, “The Triumph of Isis,
” in which he retaliated on
the sons of Cam in no very courtly strains. The poem,
however, discovered certain beauties, which pointed him
out as a youth of great promise. It is remarkable, that
although he omitted this piece in an edition of his poems
printed in 1777, he restored it in that of 1779. This is
said to have been done at Mason’s suggestion, who was
candid enough to own that it greatly excelled his own elegy,
both in poetical imagery and correct flow of versification;
but Mason appears to have forgot that his personal share in
the contest was but trifling, and that it contained a libel on
the university of Cambridge.

Except for a very short time that he was at New-college school, he was educated by his father until he arrived at his fourteenth year. He had not been long at this excellent seminary before he exhibited considerable intellectual powers, and a laudable ambition to outstrip the common process of education. He amended the text by a careful examination of nearly
eighty manuscripts, as well as some very ancient editions.
In Dec. 1711 he was presented to the rectory of Aynhoe
in Northamptonshire, by Thomas Cartwright, esq. where
John Whiston (the bookseller) says “he lived a very agreeable and Christian life, much esteemed by that worthy family and his parishioners.
” He had an equal regard for
them, and never sought any other preferment. He had a
very learned and choice library, in which he passed most
of his time, and assisted many of the learned in their publications. He became at length a proselyte to Dr. Clarke’s
Arianism, and corresponded much with him and with Will.
Whiston, as appears by Whiston’s Life of Dr. Clarke, and
his own life. According to Whiston he was the cause of
Mr. Wasse’s embracing the Arian sentiments, which he
did with such zeal, as to omit the Athanasian creed in the
service of the church, and other passages which militated
against his opinions. Whiston calls him “more learned
than any bishop in England since bishop Lloyd,
” and informs us of the singular compliment Bentley paid to him,
“When I am dead, Wasse will be the most learned man
in England.
”

the work, and after it had reached ten numbers (at Is. each) it was discontinued for want of encouragement.

He died of a short but violent illness in the afternoon of Aug. 11, 1486, and was interred, with great funeral pomp, in Winchester cathedral, in a magnificent sepulchral chapel, which is kept in the finest preservation by the society of Magdalen-college. In his will he bequeathed legacies to all his servants, to all the religious of both sexes in Winchester, to all the clergy in that city, and to every fellow and scholar in Wykeham’s two colleges and his own.

divinity. In 1624 he proceeded D. D. On the accession
of Charles I. he was made one of his chaplains in ordinary,
and in 1629 baptised his majesty’s first child, which died
immediately after. He was consecrated bishop of Limerick, in Ireland, in December 1634. Before his death he
was confined by the rebels in Limerick castle, where he
died in the latter end of 1641, and was permitted by them
to be buried in St. Munchin’s church-yard in Limerick.
“He was a person of a strict life and conversation,
” and
esteemed the best preacher at the court of king Charles;
and his published compositions are in a more pure and
elegant style than those of most of his contemporaries. His
principal work ishis “Practice of Quietness, directing a
Christian to live quietly in this troublesome world.
” We
have not discovered when this was first published, but it
had reached a third edition in 1631, and was afterwards
often reprinted. The best edition is that of 1705, cr. 8vo,
with his portrait and an engraved title-page. It is a work
which gives a high idea of the author’s placid temper and
pious resignation, amidst the confusions he lived to witness.

He gave to the Spalding society an annulet that had touched
the heads of the three kings of Cologne, whose names
were in black letters within. When he took his master’s
degree, he was appointed to officiate as usher at
Westminster-school; and soon after he took orders, under the patronage of bishop Atterbury, to whom he was ever greatly
attached, and the banishment of that celebrated prelate
made no change in his friendship for him, as he was Fully
convinced of his innocence. This attachment, and his opposition to sir Robert Walpole, barred all hopes of preferment at Westminster, but in 1732 he was appointed mas*
ter of Tiverton-school in Devonshire, over which he presided till his death. Samuel Wesley was unquestionably
the best poet of his family, but he was a very high-rhurchman, and totally disapproved of the conduct of his brothers,
John and Charles, when they became itinerant preachers,
being afraid that they would make a separation from the
church of England. He died at Tiverton Nov. 6, 1739,

He died comparatively poor, after having had in a principal degree the management of the whole funds of the society. He lived upon little himself, and his allowance to his preachers was very moderate. On the past or future effects of the vast society he formed, we shall not hazard an opinion. That he originally did good, great good, to the lower classes, is incontestable. He certainly contributed to meliorate that important part of society, and to produce a moral effect that had never before been so evident, or so extensive. In his system, however, his great machine, we see too much of human policy acting on the imperfections of human nature, to admire it much.

He was of a warm and lively character, well acquainted with all texts of scripture; and his discourses were greatly admired. He was also respectable as a scholar and a poet, and was the author of the Hymns now used in the society. He left two sons, of great reputation in the musical world.

, one of the most eminent divines of the sixteenth century, was born at Holme, in the parish of Burnley in Lancashire, in 1547, and was the descendant of an ancient family. His mother was Elizabeth Nowell, sister to the celebrated Dean of St. Paul’s, who married Thomas Whitaker, gentleman, in 1530, and sur* vived her marriage the wonderful period of seventy-six years. He acquired the elements of grammar at Burnley, where Mr. William Hargrave was at that time master, to whom in his declining years he was a kind benefactor. He was sent for, in his thirteenth year, by Dean Nowell, who maintained him in his own house, and placed him at St. Paul’s school, where he made snch rapid and satisfactory progress that, at the age of eighteen, his pious kinsman sent him to Trinity college, Cambridge, under the tuition of Mr. afterwards Dr. Robert West. His progress here being equally admired, he was first chosen scholar and then fellow. He soon procured high esteem and great fame by his learned disputations and other exercises, which afforded a proof both of his talents and application. It was his practice, and that of several other eminent persons of his time, to stand while employed in study. In 1569 he published the Prayers of the Church of England in Greek, a small volume printed by Reynold Wolf; a circumstance which requires to be mentioned, because most of his biographers assert that he was first known by his translation of Nowell’s catechism; but that translation was not printed till 1573, four years after this version of the Prayers. He had about this time suffered long and severely by a quartan ague; and as he could not live without some literary employment, he made choice of this. The book contains the morning and evening prayers, the litany, the catechism, the collects, and, to fill a vacant page or two, the prayer after receiving the holy communion, accompanied with the Latin version, (the work, as is supposed, of Walter Haddon,) which had been published by the queen’s authority a fewyears before. It is dedicated, in a prefatory address in Latin, to his uncle and patron, the dean of St. Paul’s; from whom he had received, from his childhood, innumerable favours; to whom therefore, he says, of right belonged whatsoever he could perform; and he intreats him to protect his labours, and expresses a hope, that, if he is indulgent in this his first attempt, he may one day produce something not unworthy of his acceptance. The translation achieved under such circumstances, when the author, a bachelor of arts, had barely entered his twenty- first year, must have raised great hopes, which his future progress and celebrity did not disappoint.

About this time his mother was induced, by the advice of several friends, to open a lady’s boarding and day-school at Nottingham, her eldest daughter having previously been a teacher in one for some time. In this she succeeded beyond her most sanguine expectations, and Henry’s home comforts were thus materially increased, though his family being still unable to give him an education suited to his talents, it was determined to breed him up to the hosiery trade. He was accordingly placed, at the age of fourteen, in a stocking-loom; but to this he had the greatest aversion, and his repeated remonstrances at length convinced his mother that he had a mind destined for nobler pursuits than the shining and folding up of stockings. He was consequently fixed in the office of Messrs. Coldham and Enfield, attornies and town-clerks of Nottingham. As no premium could be given with him he was engaged to serve two years before he was articled, so that though he entered this office when he was fifteen, he was not articled till the commencement of 1802. He now, at the suggestion of his employers, acquired at his leisure hours some kuowledge of Latin and. of Greek. He also made himself a. tolerable Italian scholar, and gained some acquaintance with both the Spanish and Portuguese. Among his occasional pursuits also were chemistry, astronomy, electricity, and music; but the law was his first object, to which his papers shew he had applied himself with such industry, as to make it wonderful that he could have found time, busied as his days were, for any thing else.

He frequently at this time studied fourteen hours a day; the progress which he made in twelve months was indeed astonishing; for when he went to Cambridge he was immediately as much distinguished for his classical knowledge as his genius; but the seeds of death were in him, and the place to which he had so long looked with hope, served unhappily as a hot-house to ripen them. During his first term, one of the university scholarships became vacant, and Henry, young as he was in college, and almost self-taught, was advised by those who were best able to estimate his chance of success, to offer himself as a competitor for it. He passed the whole term in preparing for this, but his strength sunk under the intenseness of his studies, and he was compelled to decline; and this was not the only misfortune. The general college examination came on; he was utterly unprepared to meet it; and believed that a failure here would have ruined his prospects for ever. He had only about a fortnight to read what other men had been the whole term reading. Once more he exerted himself beyond what his shattered health could bear: the disorder returned, and he went to his tutor Mr. Catton with tears in his eyes, and told him that he could not go into the hall to be examined. Mr. Catton, however, thought his success here of so much importance, that be exhorted him, with all possible earnestness, to hold out the six days of the examination. Strong medicines were given him, to enable him to support it, and he was pronounced the first man of his year. But life was the price which he was to pay for such honours as this. As he succeeded in gaining approbation, he became farther stimulated to studious exertions far beyond his strength, and when he returned to college in 1806, he was no longer a subject for medicine. His mind also was worn out, and it was the opinion of his medical attendants, that if he had recovered, his intellect would have been affected. In this state he died, Oct. 19, 1806, in the twenty-first year of his age.

born in 1746, of parents in low circumstances in Gloucester, where his father was a journeyman-weaver, and brought
up his son to the same business. Being however a sensible
man, he gave him what little learning was in his power at
one of the charity-schools at Gloucester. This excited a
thirst for greater acquisitions in the young man, who employed all the time he could spare in the study of such
books as fell in his way. His attainments at length attracted
the notice of a neighbouring gentleman of fortune, who
sent him to the university of Oxford, where he was entered
of Wadham college. He took the degree of M. A. Feb. 19,
1773; and about that time engaged in the study of the
Oriental languages, to which he was induced by the particular recommendation of Dr. Moore, afterwards archbishop
of Canterbury. He had before acquired a tolerable share
of Hebrew learning, by which his progress in the other
Oriental languages was greatly facilitated. In 1775, he
was appointed archbishop Laud’s professor of Arabic; on

plan; and finding assistance necessary to the completion
of it in such a manner as he wished, called to his aid Mr.
Samuel Baclcork and Dr. Parr. Although his own share of
these labours was sufficient to entitle him to the celebrity
which they procured him, he bad afterwards to lament that
he had not acknowledged his obligations to those elegant
scholars, in a preface to the volume, when it was published. As soon as the lectures were delivered, the applause
with which they were received was general throughout the
university. They were printed the same year, and met with
universal approbation. A second edition appeared in 1785;
to which the author added a sermon, which he had recently
preached before the university, on the necessity of propagating Christianity in the East Indies. Mr. White’s reputation was now established, and he was considered as one
of the ablest vindicators of the Christian doctrines which
modern times had witnessed. Lord Thnrlow, then lord
chancellor, without any solicitation, gave him a prebend
in the cathedral of Gloucester, which at once placed him
in easy and independent circumstances. In 1787 he took
his degree of D. D. and was looked up to with the greatest
respect in the university, as one of its chief ornaments. In
the year 1788, the death of Mr.Badcock was made the
pretence for an attack on Dr. White’s character both as an author and a man, by the late Dr. R. B. Gabriel, who published a pamphlet, entitled, “Facts relating to the Rev. Dr.
White’s Bampton Lectures.
” By this it appears that there
was found among the papers of the deceased Mr. Badcock,
a promissory note for 500l. from Dr. White for literary aid;
the payment of which was demanded, but refused by him
on the ground that it was illegal in the first instance, as
not having the words “value received,' 7 and, secondly, it
was for service to be rendered in the History of Egypt,
which the doctor and Mr. Badcock had projected. The
friends of the deceased, however, were of a different
opinion; and the doctor consented to liquidate the debt.
This he informs us he did,
” partly because he apprehended
that his persisting to refuse the payment of it might tend
to the disclosure of the assistance which Mr. Badcock had
given him in the Bampton Lectures; and partly, because
he was informed that the note, by Mr. Badcock’s death,
became a part of his assets, and, as such, could legally be
demanded.“But whoever reads Dr. White’s
” Statement
of Literary Obligations“must be convinced that he was
under no obligation to have paid this money, and that his
opponents availed themselves of his simplicity and the
alarm which they excited for his literary character. Gabriel, however, a man neither of literary talents or character, was at the head of an envious junto who were determined to injure Dr.White if they could; and notwithstanding his payment of the money, printed all Mr, Badcock’s
letters in the above pamphlet, in order, as he said, to vindicate the character of the deceased, as well as his own,
both of which he ridiculously pretended had been assailed
on this occasion. In consequence of this publication, Dr.
White printed
” A Statement of his Literary Obligations
to the Rev. Mr. Samuel Badcock, and the Rev. Samuel
Parr, LL.D,“By this it appeared, that, though Mr. Badcock’s share in the Lectures was considerable, yet that it
was not in that proportion which had been maliciously represented, the plan of the whole, and the execution of the
greatest part, being Dr. White’s, and Dr. Parr’s being
principally literal corrections. This statement gave sufficient satisfaction to the literary world at large. But the
malice of his enemy was not yet satiated, as may appear
by the following correspondence, which having been circulated chiefly at Oxford, may be here recorded as an
additional defence of Dr. White.
”A printed paper, entitled ‘Minutes of what passed at
three interviews which lately took place between Dr. White
and Dr. Gabriel in London and in Bath,’ and signed
e, and born in London, November the 28th, 1570. He was educated in Merchant Taylors’ school, elected scholar of St. John’s college, in Oxford, in 1588, and July 1, 1594,
, a learned English lawyer, was
descended of a good family near Oakingham, in Berkshire,
and born in London, November the 28th, 1570. He was
educated in Merchant Taylors’ school, elected scholar of
St. John’s college, in Oxford, in 1588, and July 1, 1594, took
the degree of bachelor of civil law. He afterwards settled
in the Middle Temple, became summer-reader of that
house in the 17th year of king James I. a knight, member
of parliament for Woodstock in 1620, chief justice of
Chester, and at length one of the justices of the king’s
bench. Kitig Charles I. said of him, that he was “a stout,
wise, and learned man, and one who knew what belongs
to uphold magistrates and magistracy in their dignity.
” In
Trinity term 1632, he fell ill of a cold, which so increased
upon him that he was advised to go in the country; on
which he took leave of his brethren the judges and serjeants,
saying, “God be with you, I shall never see you again;
”
and this without the least disturbance or trouble of his
thoughts; and soen after he came into the country he
died, June 22. “On his death,
” says his son, “the king
lost as good a subject, his country as good a patriot, the
people as just a 'judge, as ever lived. Ail honest men lamented the loss ui huri: no man in his age left behind him
a more honoured memory. His reason was clear and
strong, and his learning deep and general. He had the
Latin tongue so perfect, that sitting judge of assize at Oxford, when some foreigners, persons of quality, being
there, and coming to the court to see the manner of our
proceedings in matters of justice, this judge caused them
to sit down, and briefly repeated the heads of his charge to
the grand jury in good and elegant Latin, and thereby informed the strangers and the scholars of the ability of our
judges, and the course of our proceedings in matters of
law and justice. He understood the Greek very well, and
the Hebrew, and was versed in the Jewish histories, and
exactly knowing in the history of his own country, and in
the pedigrees of most persons of honour and quality in the
kingdom, and was much conversant in the studies of antiquity and heraldry. He was not excelled by, any in the
knowledge of his own profession of the common law of
England^ wherein his knowledge of the civil law (whereof he was a graduate in Oxford) was a help to him. His
learned arguments both at the bar and bench will confirm this truth.
” He was interred at Fawley near High Wyr

reputation answerable to each respective character; but
likewise conversed with books, and made himself a large
provision from his studies and contemplation. Like that
noble Roman, Portius Cato, as described by Nepos, he
was `Reipublicae peritus, et jurisconsultus, et’nfttgnus iniperator, et probabilis orator, cupidissimus titerafttuf:' a
statesman and learned in the law, a great commander, an
eminent speaker in parliament, and an exquisite scholar.
He had all along so much business, one would not imagine
he ever had leisure for books yet who considers his studies
might believe he had been always shut up with his friend
Selden, and the dust of action never fallen on his gown.
His relation to the public was such throughout all the revolutions, that few mysteries of state could be to him any
secret. Nor was the felicity of his pen less considerable
than his knowledge of affairs, or did less service to the
cause he espoused. So we find the words apt and proper
for the occasion; the style clear, easy, and wichout the
least force or affectation of any kind, as is shewn in his
speeches, his narratives, his descriptions, and in every place
where the subject deserves the least care or consideration.
”
Lord Clarendon has left this testimony in favour of Whitelocke: whom, numbering among his early friends in life,
he calls, a man of eminent parts and great learning out of
his profession, and in his profession of signal reputation.
“And though,
” says the noble historian, “he did afterwards bow his knee to Baal, and so swerved from his allegiance, it was with less rancour and malice than other men.
He never led, but followed; and was rather carried away
with the torrent than swam with the stream; and failed
through those infirmities, which less than a general defection and a prosperous rebellion could never have discovered.
”
Lord Clarendon has elsewhere described him, as “from
the beginning concurring with the parliament, without any
inclinations to their persons or principles and,
” says he,
“he had the same reasons afterwards not to separate from
them. All his estate was in their quarters and he had a
nature, that could not bear or submit to be undone ‘though
to his friends, who were commissioners for the king, he
used his old openness, and professed his detestation of all
the proceedings of his party, yet could not leave them.’
”

He now returned home to his father in Lincolnshire; and his uncle, the abbot, finding that he had made some progress in grammatical learning, advised that he should be sent to the university. Accordingly he entered of Queen’s college, Cambridge, about 1548, but soon after removed to Pembroke- hall, where the celebrated John Bradford, the martyr, was his tutor. He had not been here long before he was recommended by his tutor and Mr. Grindal (then fellow, and afterwards archbishop of Canterbury) to the master, Nicholas Ridley, by which means he was made scholar of that house, and chosen bibleclerk. These advantages were the more acceptable to him, as his father had suffered some great losses at sea, and was less able to provide for him. When Bradford left Cambridge in 15.50, Whitgift was placed under the care of Mr. Gregory Garth, who continued his tutor while he remained at Pensbroke-hall, which was until he took his degree of bachelor of arts in 1553-4. The following year, he was unanimously elected fellow of Peter-house, and commenced master of arts in 1557.

, one of our early grammarians, was born in Lichfield about 1480, and educated under
the famous grammarian, John Stanbridge, in the school adjoining to Magdalen college, Oxford. He afterwards made
a considerable progress in philosophy, but took more pleasure in classical and grammatical studies, in which he fancied himself destined to shine. In 150.1 he began to teach
a grammar-school, probably in London, as all his publications were dated thence. In the beginning of 1513, he
supplicated the congregation of regents of the university
of Oxford, by the name of Robert WhittingtOn, a secular chaplain, and a scholar of the art of rhetoric, that
whereas he had spent fourteen years in the study of
the said art, and twelve years in teaching, “it might
be sufficient for him that he might be ia'ureated.
” This
being granted, he composed an hundred verses which
were stuck up in public places, especially on the doors of
St. Mary’s church, and was solemnly crowned with a wreath
of laurel, &c. that is, he was made doctor of grammar, an
nnusual title and ceremony, and the last of the kind. This
appears to have conferred no academical rank, for he was
afterwards admitted to the degree of bachelor of arts. From
this time, however, he called himself in several of his works
Protovates Angli<e, an assumption which his fellow-grammarians, Herman and Lily, did not much relish. He appears indeed to have been very conceited of his abilities,
and to have undervalued those who were at least his equals.
Yet historians allow him to have been an excellent Greek
and Latin scholar, and a man of a facetious turn, but too
much given to personal satire both in conversation, and in
his literary disputes with Lily, Aldridge, and others. He
was alive in 1530, but' how long afterwards does not appear. He wrote a great many grammatical treatises, some
of which must have long been in use in schools, for they
went through many editions. They are enumerated by
Wood, and, more correctly, by Mr.Dibdin in his Typographical Antiquities. Warton also mentions a few of them,
and says that some of.his Latin poetry is in a very classical
style, and much, in the manner of the earlier Italian poets.

With these acquisitions, he did not hastily obtrude the
novel opinions to which they had given rise. He was
thirty-six years of age before his talents appeared to the
world, and even then they were called forth rather by necessity than choice. In 1360 he became the advocate for
the university against the incroachments made by the mendicant friars, who had been very troublesome from their
first establishment in Oxford in 1230, and had occasioned
great inquietude to the chancellor and scholars, by infringing their statutes and privileges, and setting up an exempt
jurisdiction. Their misconduct had decreased the number
of students from thirty thousand to six thousand, parents
being afraid to send their children to the university, where
they were in danger of being enticed by these friars from
the colleges into convents; and no regard was paid to the
determination of parliament in 1366, that the friars should
receive no scholar under the age of eighteen. But Wickliffe now distinguished himself against these usurpations,
and, with Thoresby, Bolton, Hereford, and other colleagues,
openly opposed the justification which the friars had advanced in favour of their begging trade from the example
of Christ and his apostles. Wickliffe also wrote several
tracts against them, particularly “Of Clerks Possessioners,
”
“Of the Poverty of Christ, against able Beggary,
” and
“Of Idleness in Beggary.
” These were written, with an
elegance uncommon in that age, in the English language,
of which he may be considered as one of the first refiners,
while his writings afford many curious specimens of old
English orthography. His controversies gave him such reputation in the university, that, in 1361 he was advanced
to be master of Baliol college; and four years after he
was made warden of Canterbury-hall, founded by Simon
de Islip, archbishop of Canterbury, in 1361, and now included in Christ-church. The letters of institution, by
which the archbishop appointed him to this wardenship,
were dated 14 Dec. 1365, and in them he is styled, “a
person in whose fidelity, circumspection, and industry, his
grace very much confided; and one on whom he had fixed
his eyes for that place, on account of the honesty of his
life, his laudable conversation, and knowledge of letters.
”
Wickliffe amply fulfilled these expectations, till the
death of the archbishop in 1366, who was succeeded in
che archiepiscopal dignity by Simon Langham. This prelate had been a monk, and being inclined to favour the religious against the seculars, was easily persuaded by the
morrks of Canterbury to eject Wickliffe in 1367 from his
wardenship, and the other seculars from their fellowships.
He also issued out his mandate, requiring WicklifFe and
all the scholars to yield obedience to Wodehall as their
warden. This Wodehall had actually been appointed warden by the founder, but he was at such variance with the
secular scholars, that the archbishop was compelled to
turn him and three other monks out of his new-founded
hall, at which time he appointed Wickliffe to be warden,
and three other seculars to be scholars. The scholars now,
however, refused to yield obedience to Wodehall, as being
contrary to the oath they had taken to the founder, and
Langham, irritated at their obstinacy, sequestered the revenue, and took away the books, &c. belonging to the balL
Wickliffe, and his expelled fellows, appealed to the pope,
who issued a bull, dated at Viterbo 28 May, 1370, restoring Wodehall and the monks, and imposing perpetual silence on Wickliffe and his associates. As this bull was
illegal, and interfered with the form of the licence of
mortmain, the monks in 1372 screened themselves by procuring the royal pardon, and a confirmation of the papal
sentence, for which they paid 200 marks, nearly 800l. of
our money.
n at Trentham. He was entered of St. John’s college, Cambridge, March 13, 1709- 10, and was admitted scholar in 1710. On April 6, 1711, he attended Mr. Saunderson’s mathematical
, an English antiquary and physician, was the eldest son of Mr. Richard Wilkes, of
Willenhall, in the county of Stafford, a gentleman who lived upon
his own estate, and where his ancestors had been seated
since the time of Edward IV. His mother was Lucretia,
youngest daughter of Jojias Asteley, of Woodeaton, in Staffordshire, an ancient and respectable family. He was born
March 16, 1690-91, and had his school-education at Trentham. He was entered of St. John’s college, Cambridge,
March 13, 1709- 10, and was admitted scholar in 1710. On
April 6, 1711, he attended Mr. Saunderson’s mathematical
lectures, aud ever after continued a particular friendship
with that gentleman. In the preface to “Saunderson’s
Elements of Algebra,
” the reader is told, that whatever
materials had been got together for publishing Saunderson’s life, had been received, among other gentlemen, from
Mr. Richard Wilkes. He took the degree of B.A. January 1713-14; and was chosen fellow Jan. 21, 1716-17;
and April 11, 1716, was admitted into lady Sadler’s Algetra Lecture, and took the degree of M. A. at the commencement of 1717; also July 4, 1718, he was chosen
Linacre Lecturer. It does not appear that he ever took
any degrees in medicine. He seems to have taken pupils
and taught mathematics in the college from 1715 till tfet
time thathe left it. It is not known when he took deacon’s orders, but a relation of his remembered his having
preached at Wolverhampton. He also preached some time
at Stow, near Chartley. The disgust he took to the ministry has been imputed to his being disappointed in the
hope of preferment in the church, and he thought he could
make his talents turn to better account, and accordingly
began to practise physic at Wolverhampton, Feb. 1720,
and became veryeminent in his profession. On the 24th
June 1,725, he married Miss Rachel Manlove, of Lee’s-hill,
near Abbots Bromley in Staffordshire, with whom he had
a handsome fortune, and from that time he dwelt with his
father at Willenhall. In the beginning of 1747 he had a
severe fit of illness, during which, among other employments, he composed a whimsical epitaph on himself, which
may be seen in Shaw’s History of Staffordshire. His wife
dying in May 1756, he afterwards married in October the
same year, Mrs. Frances Bendish (sister to the late Rev. sir Richard Wrottesley, of WYottesley, bart.) who died Dec.
24, 1798, at Froxfield, Hampshire, at a very advanced age.
Dr. Wilkes died March 6, 1760, of the gout in his stomach,
greatly lamented by his tenants, to whom he had been an
indulgent landlord, and by the poor to whom he had been
a kind and liberal physician and friend.

With this encouragement Wilkinson went on preaching
what he pleased without fear, but removed to London, as
the better scene of action, where he was made minister of
St. Faith’s, under St. Paul’s, and one of the assembly of
divines. He was also a frequent preacher before the parliament on their monthly fasts, or on thanksgiving days. In
1645 he was promoted to the rectory of St. Dunstan’s in
the West. Soon after he was constituted one of the six
ministers appointed to go to Oxford (then in the power of parliament), and to establish preachings and lectures upon
presbyterian principles and forms. He was also made one
of the visitors for the ejection of all heads of houses, fellows, students, &c. who refused compliance with the now
predominant party. For these services he was made a
senior fellow of Magdalen college (which, Wood says, he kept till he married a holy woman called the Lady Carr),
a canon of Christ church, doctor of divinity, and, after
Cheynel’s departure, Margaret professor. Of all this he
was deprived at the restoration, but occasionally preached
in or about London, as opportunity offered, particularly
at Clapham, where he died in September 1675, and his
body, after lying in state in Drapers’ hall, London, was
buried with great solemnity in the church of St. Dunstan’s.
His printed works are entirely “Sermons
” preached before
the parliament, or in the “Morning Exercise
” at Cripplegate and Southwark, and seem to confirm part of the character Wood gives of him, that “he was a good scholar,
always a close student, an excellent preacher (though his voice was shrill and whining),
” yet, adds Wood, “his sermons were commonly full of dire and confusion, especially
while the rebellion lasted.

Pindar of Springfield in Essex. He was born, we are not told in what year, at Royston, and admitted scholar of King’s- college, Cambridge, Oct. 20, 1692. He proceeded A.
, a teacher of considerable
note, and a publisher of some school-books of reputation,
was the second son of Thomas Willymot of Royston, in the
county of Cambridge, by his wife Rachel, daughter of Dr.
Pindar of Springfield in Essex. He was born, we are not
told in what year, at Royston, and admitted scholar of
King’s- college, Cambridge, Oct. 20, 1692. He proceeded
A. B. in 1697, A. M. in 1700, and LL. D. in 1707. After
taking his master’s degree he went as usher to Eton, where
Cole says “he continued not long, but kept a school at
Isleworth in Middlesex:
” Harwood, however, says that
he was many years an assistant at Eton, and was the editor
of several books for the use of boys educated there* Harwood adds that he was tutor, when at King’s college, to
lord Henry and lord Richard Lumley, sons of the earl of
Scarborough; and Cole informs us that he was private
tutor in the family of John Bromley, of Horseheath-hall,
in Cambridgeshire, esq. father of Henry lord Montfort;
“but here endeavouring to pay his addresses to one of the
ladies of the family, he was dismissed. 7 ' When he left
Eton is uncertain, but in 1721 we find him master of a
private school at Isleworth, and at that time one of the
candidates for the mastership of St. Paul’s school, in which
he did not succeed. By an advertisement then published
by him, it would appear that his failure arose in son>$,
measure from his being suspected of an attachment to the
pretender, which he denies. Some time before this he had
studied civil law, and entered himself of Doctors’-comtnons, but changing his mind, returned to college, took
holy orders, and was made vice-provost of King’s college
hi the above year, 1721, at which time he was senior fellow.
In 1735 he was presented to the rectory of Milton near
Cambridge, after a contest with the college, which refused
him, in consideration of his not having remained and performed the requisite college exercises. Even with this,
Cole says, he was soon dissatisfied, and would have returned to his fellowship had it been possible. He died
June 7, 1737, of an apoplexy, at the Swan Inn, at Bedford, on his return from Bath. Among his publications for

, a statesman and divine in the reign of queen Elizabeth, celebrated for the politeness of his style and the extent of his knowledge, was the son of Thomas Wilson of Stroby in Lincolnshire, by Anne daughter and heir of Roger Comberwortb, of Comberworth in the same county. He was educated at Eton, and atKing’scollege, Cambridge; and went thence into the family of Charles Brandon, duke of Suffolk, who intrusted him with the education of his two sons. During the reign of Mary, to whose persecution many fugitives owed their qualifications for future honours, he lived abroad, received the degree of doctor of laws at Ferrara, and was for some time imprisoned by the inquisition at Rome, on account of his two treatises on rhetoric and logic, which he had published in England, and in the English language, several years before. He is said to have suffered the torture, and would have been put to death, on refusing to deny his faith, had not a fire happened, which induced the populace to force open the prison, that those confined there might not perish > by which means he escaped; and, returning to England, after queen Mary’s death, was appointed one of the masters of requests, and master of St. Katherine’s hospital near the Tower. This was in the third year of queen Elizabeth, at which time he was her majesty’s secretary; but finding his patent for the mastership of St. Catherine’s void, because he was not a priest, according to queen Philippa’s charter, he surrendered the office, and had a new patent, with a non obstante, Dec. 7, 1563. According to Dr. Ducarel, his conduct in this office was somewhat objectionable, as he sold to the city of London the fair of St. Katherine’s, for the sum of 700 marks, surrendered the charter of Henry VI. and took a new one 8. Elizabeth, leaving out the liberty of the aforesaid fair; and did many other things very prejudicial to his successors. In 15lhe had been admitted a civilian; and in 1576 he was sent on an embassy to the Low Countries, where he acquitted himself so well, that in the following year he was named to succeed sir Thomas Smith as secretary of state; and in 1579 obtained a deanery of Durham. He died in 1581, and was buried in St. Katherine’s church. He was endowed with an uncommon strength of memory, which enabled him to act with N remarkable dispatch in his negociations. Yet he was more distinguished as a scholar than as a minister, and was perhaps unfortunate in having served jointly with the illustrious Walsingham, whose admirable conduct in his office admitted of no competition. Sir Thomas Wilson married Anne, daughter of sir William Winter, of Lidney in Gloucestershire, and left three children: Nicholas, who settled at Sheepwash in Lincolnshire; Mary, married, first, to Robert Burdett, of Bramcote in Warwickshire, secondly to sir Christopher Lowther, of Lowther in Westmoreland; and Lucretia, wife of George Belgrave, of Belgrave in Leicestershire.

Bishop Wilson’s life was an uniform display of the most genuine and active benevolence. Considering himself as the steward, not the proprietor, of the revenues of the bishopric, he devoted his income to what he esteemed its proper use. The annual receipts of the bishopric, as we have just mentioned, did not exceed 300l. in money; some necessaries in his house were of course to be paid for in money; distressed or shipwrecked mariners, and some other poor objects, it was also requisite to relieve with money; but the poor of the island were fed and clothed, and the house in general supplied from his demesnes by exchange, without money. The poor who could spin or weave, found the best market at Bishop’s-court, where they bartered the produce of their labour for corn. Taylors an'd shoemakers were kept in the house constantly employed, to make into garments or shoes that cloth or leather which his corn had purchased; and the aged and the infirm were supplied according to their several wants. At the same time he kept an open hospitable table, covered with the produce of his own demesnes, at which he presided with equal affability and decorum. His manners, though always consistently adorned with Christian gravity, were ever gentle and polite; and in his conversation he was one of the most entertaining and agreeable, as well as instructive of men. With these qualities of the gentleman, the bishop united the accomplishments and virtues of the scholar and the divine. He was well skilled in the Hebrew, Greek, and Latin languages; and there was hardly any part of science that could be serviceable in his diocese which he did not understand. In his younger days he had a poetical turn, but afterwards laid aside such amusements, as thinking them inconsistent with his episcopal character. During the fiftyeight years that he held the bishopric, he never failed, unless on occasions of sickness, to expound the scripture, to preach, or to administer the sacrament, every Sunday, at one or other of the churches in his diocese, and, if absent from the island, he always preached at the church where he resided for the day. He alternately visited the different parishes of his diocese on Sundays (which the dimensions of the island will permit in a carriage) without giving them notice, and, after doing the duty of the day, returned home to dinner. His family prayers were as regular as his public duties. Every summer morning at six, and every winter morning at seven o'clock, his whole household attended him in his chapel, where he himself, or one of those divinity-students whom he maintained in his house, performed the service of the day; and in the evening they did the same. Thus it was that he formed his young clergy for the pulpit, and for a graceful delivery. He was so great a friend to toleration, that the papists who resided in the island, loved and esteemed him, and not unfrequently attended his ministrations. Dissenters likewise even attended the communion-service, as he admitted them to receive the sacrament, either standing or sitting, at their own option, so that there was neither schism nor separate- congregation in his diocese. The few quakers also, who were resident on the island, visited and respected him. Many other amiable, and some singular traits of the character of this excellent prelate may be seen in the work from which the above particulars are taken.

Although from the time of his coming into parliament,
he usually voted with the opposition of that day, he never
was what is called a thorough party-man, frequently deviating from those to whom he was in general attached,
when, in matters of importance, his conscience directed
him to take a different course from them; on which account his virtues and talents were never rightly appreciated
by persons of that description, who frequently on this
ground vainly attempted to undervalue him. After thq
rupture between Mr. Fox and Mr. Burke, in consequence
of the French revolution, Mr. Windham attached himself
wholly to the latter, with whom he had for many years
lived in the closest intimacy; and of whose genius and
virtues he had always the highest admiration. Being with
him thoroughly convinced of the danger then impending
over his country from the measures adopted by certain
classes of Englishmen, in consequence of that tremendous
convulsion, he did not hesitate to unite with the duke of
Portland, lord Spencer, and others, in accepting offices
under the administration in which Mr. Pitt then presided.
On this arrangement Mr. Windham was appointed secretary at war, with a seat in the cabinet, an honourable distinction which had never before been annexed to that
office. This station he continued to fill with the highest
reputation from that time (17S4) till 1801, when he, lord
Spencer, lord Grenville, and Mr. Pitt, resigned their offi-r
ces; and shortly afterwards Mr. Addington (now lord viscount Sidmouth) was appointed chancellor of the exchequer
and first lord of the treasury. On the preliminaries of
peace with France being acceded to by that statesman aod
his coadjutors, in 1801, Mr. Windham made his celebrated
speech in parliament, which was afterwards (April 1802)
published, with an Appendix, containing a character of
the Usurper of the French throne, which will transmit to
posterity the principal passages of his life up to that period,
in the most lively colours. On Mr. Addington being driven
from the helm, in 1805, principally by the battery of Mr,
Windham’s eloquence, a new administration was again
formed by Mr. Pitt, which was dissolved by his death, in
1806; and shortly afterwards, on lord Grenville’s accepting the office of first lord of the Treasury, Mr. Windham
was appointed secretary of state for the war department,
which he held till his majesty in the following year thought
fit to constitute a new administration. During this period
he carried into a law his bill for the limited service of those
who enlist in our regular army; a measure which will ever
endear his name to the English soldiery. But it is not our
purpose to detail the particular measures which either
originated from him, or in which he took a part. This indeed would be impossible within any prescribed limits;
and would involve the history of perhaps the whole of the
war. It may suffice to notice that his genius and talents
were universally acknoxvledged. He was unquestionably
not inferior, in many respects, to the most admired characters of the age that is just gone by. He had been in
his earlier years a very diligent student, and was an excellent Greek and Latin scholar. In his latter years, like
Burke and Johnson, he was an excursive reader, but gathered a great variety of knowledge from different books,
and from occasionally mixing, like them, with very various
classes and descriptions of men. His memory was most
tenacious. In his parliamentary speeches his principal
object always was to convince the understanding by irrefragable argument, which he at the same time enlivened
by a profusion of imagery, drawn sometimes from the most
abstruse parts of science, but oftener from the most familiar
objects of common life. But what gave a peculiar lustre
to whatever he urged, was his known and uniform integrity,
and a firm conviction in the breasts of his hearers, that he
always uttered the genuine and disinterested sentiments of
his heart. His language, both in writing and speaking,
was always simple, and he was extremely fond of idiomatic
phrases, which he thought greatly contributed to preserve
the purity of our language. He surveyed every subject of
importance with a philosophic eye, and was thence enabled
to discover and detect latent mischief, concealed under the
plausible appearance of public advantage. Hence all the
clarnourers for undefined and imaginary liberty, and all
those who meditate the subversion of the constitution under
the pretext of Reform, shrunk from his grasp; and persons
of this description were his only enemies. But his dauntless intrepidity, and his noble disdain of vulgar popularity,
held up a shield against their malice; and no fear of consequences ever drove him from that manly and honourable
course, which the rectitude and purity of his mind induced
him to pursue. As an orator, he was simple, elegant,
prompt, and graceful. His genius was so fertile, and his
reading so extensive, that there were few subjects on which
he could not instruct, amuse, and persuade. He was frequently (as has justly been observed) “at once entertaining and abstruse, drawing illustrations promiscuously from
familiar life, and the recondite parts of science; nor was
it unusual to hear him through three adjoining sentences,
in the first witty, in the second metaphysical, and in the
last scholastic.
” But his eloquence derived its principal
power from the quickness of his apprehension, and the
philosophical profundity of his mind. In private life no
man perhaps of any age had a greater number of zealous
friends and admirers. In addition to his extraordinary ta-^
lents and accomplishments, the grace and happiness of his
address and manner gave an irresistible charm to his conversation; and few, it is believed, of either sex (for his address to ladies was inimitably elegant and graceful) ever
partook of his society without pleasure and admiration, or
quitted it without regret. His brilliant imagination, his
various knowledge, his acuteness, his good taste, his wit,
his dignity of sentiment, and his gentleness of manner (for he never was loud or intemperate) made him universally
admired and respected. To crown all these virtues and
accomplishments, it mav be added, that he fulfilled all the
duties. of life, the lesser as well as the greatest, with the
most scrupulous attention; and was always particularly ardent in vindicating the cause of oppressed merit. But his
best eulogy is the general sentiment of sorrow which agitated every bosom on the sudden s and unexpected stroke
which terminated in his death. During the nineteen days
of his sickness, his hall was daily visited by several hundred
successive inquirers concerning the state of his health; and
that part of Pall Mall in which his house was situated, was
thronged with carriages filled with ladies, whom a similar
anxiety brought to his door. Every morning, and also at a
late hour every evening, when his physicians and surgeons
attended, several apartments in his house were filled with
friends, who anxiously waited to receive the latest and
most accurate accounts of the progress or abatement of
his disorder. This sympathetic feeling extended almost
through every class, and even reached the throiio, for his
majesty frequently inquired concerning the state of his
health, pronouncing on him this high eulogy, that “he
was a genuine patriot, and a truly honest man.
” Of the
fatal malady which put an end to his invaluable life, erroneous accounts have been published, but the fact was, that
on the 8th of July 1809, Mr. Windham, returningon foot
at twelve o'clock at niiht from the house of a friend, as he
passed by the end of Conduit-street, saw a house on fire,
and instantly hastened to the spot, with a view to assist the
sufferers; and soon observed that the house of the Hon.
Mr. Frederic North was not far distant from that which was
then on fire. He therefore immediately undertook to
save his friend’s library, which he knew to be very valuable. With the most strenuous activity he exerted himself for four hours, in the midst of rain and the playing of
the fire-engines, with such effect that, with the assistance
of two or three persons whom he had selected from the
crowd assembled on this occasion, he saved four parts out
of five of the library; and before they could empty the
fifth book room, the house took fire. The books were immediately removed, not to Mr. Windham’s house, but to
the houses of the opposite neighbours, who cook great care
of them. In removing same heavy volumes he accidentally
fell, and suffered a slight contusion on his hip, of which,
however, he unfortunately took no notice for some months,
when an indolent encysted tumour was formed, which,
after due consultation, it was judged proper to cut out.
The operation was accordingly performed apparently with
success on May 17, 1810, but soon after unfavourable
symptoms came on, and terminated fatally June 4, to the
unspeakable regret of all who knew him.

beginning with a volunqe on the Belvedere statues, in the
manner of Richardson, who, he says, only ran over Rome.
In. the preface he intended to mention the fate of these
statues at the sacking of Rome in 1527, when the soldiers
made a fire in Raphael’s lodge, which spoiled many things.
He also intended a history of the corruption of taste in art,
the restoration of statues, and an illustration of the obscure
points of mythology. All these different essays led him to
his “History of Art,
” and his “Monumenti Inediti.
” It
must, however, be confessed, that the first of these works
has not all the clearness and precision that might be expected in its general plan, and division of its parts and objects; but it has enlarged and extended the ideas both of
antiquaries ancj collectors. The description of the gems
and sulphurs of the Stosch cabinet contributed not a little
to extend Mr. Winkelman’s knowledge. Few persons have
had opportunities of contemplating such vast collections.
The engravings of Lippet and count Caylus are all that
many can arrive at. Mr. Winkelman’s “Monumenti Inediti,
” of which he had begun the third vol. History of Art
” is full of anachronisms.

was the son of Francis Winterton of Lutterworth in Leicestershire, A. M. where he was born. That he was an excellent Greek scholar appears from many of his productions in that language, which entitled him to be a competitor, though an unsuccessful one, in 1627, for the
Greek professorship at Cambridge, on the death of Andrew
Downes, with four other candidates, who all read solemn
lectures in the schools on a subject appointed them by the
electors. He was educated at KingVcollege, Cambridge,
where he had the misfortune, during the early part of his
residence, to be somewhat disordered in his intellects;
but, recovering, he took to the study of physic, and was
allowed to excel all of that profession in his time. In 1631
he 'published the first book of Hippocrates’s Aphorisms in
a Greek metrical version at Cambridge, in quarto, and the
year following the whole seven books together, in the same
manner. In 1633, by the advice of Dr. John Collins, regius professor of physic, he published an edition of the
Aphorisms in octavo at Cambridge, with Frere’s Latin poetical translation, and his own Greek version, with a Latin
prose translation by John Heurnus of Utrecht. At the
end is annexed a small book of epigrams and poems, composed by the chiefest wits of both universities, but chiefly
of Cambridge, and of KingVcollege in particular. In
1631 he printed, in octavo, at Cambridge, a translation of
“Gerard’s Meditations,
” whicfi went through six editions
in about nine years. In 1632 he published likewise at
Cambridge, in octavo, Gerard’s “Golden Chain of Divine Aphorisms.
” He published also, for the use of Etonschool, an edition of “Dionysius de situ Orbis,
” with
some Greek verse* at the end of it, addressed to the scholars, and exhorting them to the study of geography. This
was reprinted at London in 1668, 12mo. In the above
year (1632), he translated “Drexelius on Eternity,
” which
was printed at Cambridge. In the preface to this, he has
some sentiments which shew that he was of a pious but
somewhat singular turn of mind. In 1634, being M. D.
he was nominated by the king his professor of physic for
forty years, if he should live so long. The year following
he published at Cambridge in octavo an edition of the
“Minor Greek Poets,
” with observations upon Hesiod.
This has passed through many editions. His advancement
to the professorship appears to have interrupted his employment as an author; but he did not survive that honour
long, dying in the prime of life Sept. 13, 1636. He vva^

distinguished by his thirst after^knowledge, and his diligent
application to school-exercises. Obtaining an exhibition
at Pembroke-college, Oxford, he there became scholar^
fellow, and tutor, taking his degree of M. A. in 1759. In
1767, archbishop Seeker made him rector of Wittri.shamin Kent, and called him to be one of his domestic chaplains and the following year he went to Oxford, and took
his degree of bachelor of divinity. After the deathof his
grace, in the following year, he resided at Wittrisham, or
on the small living of St. Peter, in Wallingford; until, in
1774, relinquishing these preferments, he was presented,.
by the late bisbrop of Winchester, to the rectory of Brightwell, Berks. At Brightwell he lived constantly forty years,
and at Brightwell he died, July 29, 1814, leaving a widow, two sons, and one grand -daughter. In early life
Mr. Wintle was unremitting in the attainment of useful
learning, and in the practice of religion and virtue; and
in his more mature and later years he ceased not, by precept and example, to set forth the expediency and advantages of religion, while his fame in the literary world was
not inconsiderable. He published, 1st, “An improved

Francis Wise, a mercer at Oxford, June 3, 1695. He received the first part of his education in New college school,
under the care of Mr. James Badger, a man very eminent
as a schoolmaster. In January 1710-11 he was admitted
a. member of Trinity college, and in the summer following
was elected scholar of that house. He took the degree of
M.A. in 1717, and about this period was employed by
Mr. Hudson, as an underkeeper or assistant in the Bodleian
library, an admirable school for Mr. Wise, who had a turn
for literary history and antiquities. In 1718 he became
probationer, and in the following year actual fellow of his
college. In 1722 he published “Asser Menevensis de rebus gestis Alfredi magni,
” 8vo, very elegantly printed, and
with suitable engravings, &c. The year preceding this,
(172 J) the hon. Francis North, afterwards earl of Guildford, entered of Trinity college under die tuition of Mr.
Wise, for whom he entertained a great esteem through
life. From this nobleman he received the living of Eljesfield near Oxford, a very small piece of preferment, and
not worth above 251. a year at most, but peculiarly agrefeable to our author, who contrived to make it a place of
some importance to curious visitors. He took a small
estate there, on a long lease, under lord Guildford, and
converted a cottage upon it into an agreeable retirement,
by building one or two good rooms, and laying out a garden with a piece of ground adjoining, scarcely before of
any use, in a very whimsical but pleasing manner. In this
little spot of a few acres, his visitors were surprised to
meet with ponds, cascades, seats, a triumphal arch, the
tower of Babel, a Druid temple, and an Egyptian pyramid.
These buildings, which were designed to resemble the
structures of antiquity, were erected in exact scale and
measure, to give, as far as miniature would permit, a just
idea of the edifice they were intended to represent. From
the time that his illustrious pupil left Oxford, Mr. Wise constantly resided in his family at intervals, and divided his
time between the seat of the Muses, and the elegant mansion of his friend and patron. In 1726 he was elected
custos archivorum; and in 1727 took his degree of bachelor of divinity.

In 1498, he was made bursar of the college, about which time he has the credit of building Magdalen tower. It is yet more in proof of his learning having been of the most liberal kind, and accompanied with a corresponding liberality of sentiment, that he became acquainted with Erasmus, then at Oxford, and joined that illustrious scholar in promoting classical studies, which were peculiarly obnoxious to the bigotry of the times. The letters which passed between Wolsey and Erasmus for some years imply mutual respect and union of sentiment on all matters in which literature was concerned; and their love of learning, and contempt for the monks, although this last was excited by different motives, are points in which we perceive no great disagreement. Yet as Erasmus continued to live the life of a mere scholar, precarious and dependent, and Wolsey was rapidly advancing to rank and honours, too many and too high for a subject, a distance was placed between them which Wolsey would not shorten, and Erasmus could not pass. Hence, while a courteous familiarity was preserved in Wolsey’s correspondence, Erasmus could not help betraying the feelings of a client who has received little more than promises from his patron, and when Wolsey fell from his high state, Erasmus joined in the opinion that he was unworthy of it. For this he is severely censured by Fiddes, and ably defended by Knight and Jortin.

, an English prelate, was a native of Norfolk, born in 1612, and the son of Lawrence Womock, B. D. rector of Lopham and Fersfield in that county. He was admitted pensioner of Corpus Christi, Cambridge, July 4, 1629, and in October following was chosen a scholar of sir Nich. Bacon’s foundation. He took the degree of A. B. in 1632, was ordained deacon Sept. 21, 1634, and proceeded A.M. in 1639. He is supposed to have succeeded his father in the living of Lopham upcfi his diocese in 1642, but was ejected by the Norfolk committee for the examination of those who were deemed scandalous ministers, and appears to have been afterwards imprisoned for his principles of religion and loyalty, and to have suffered extreme hardships. After the restoration v however, he was promoted by letters mandate to the degree of D. D. and made both archdeacon of Suffolk, Sept. 8, 1660, and a prebendary of Ely. In 1662 he was presented to the rectory of Horningsheath in Suffolk, and in 1663 to that of Boxford in the same county. He was at length promoted, but late in life, to the bishopric of St. David’s, Nov. 11, 1683, a preferment which, owing to his short continuance in it, was detrimental to his relations. He died March 12, 1685, aged seventy-three, and was buried near the remains of his only daughter in the south aile of the church of St. Margaret, Westminster, where, on a small compartment affixed to the pillar next the west end, is an inscription to his memory.

Of the particulars of his life, the proper subject for our
pages, we reluctantly confess ourselves ignorant; but shall
observe, that in 1751, he made the tour of Greece, Egypt,
and Palestine, in company with Mr. Dawkins and Mr. Bouverie; and at his return published a splendid work, in folio,
entitled “The Ruins of Palmyra, otherwise Tedmor in the
Desert,
” being an account of the ancient and modern state
of that place; with a great number of elegant engravings
of its ruins by Fourdrinier, from drawings made on the spot.
This was followed by a similar work respecting Balbec.
Speaking of the abovementioned friends, he says, “Had I
been so fortunate as to have enjoyed their assistance in
arranging and preparing for the public the substance of our
many friendly conversations on this subject (Homer) I
should be less anxious about the fate of the following work:
but, whatever my success may be in an attempt to contribute to the amusement of a vacant hour, I am happy to
think, that, though I should fail to answer the expectations of public curiosity, I am sure to satisfy the demands
of private friendship; and that, acting as the only sur^

into execution the purpose of men for whose memory I
shall ever retain the greatest veneration; and though I may

He received the first part of his education at a school in the country, where he made a considerable progress in the Latin and Greek languages; but his father designing him for trade, he was taken from school, before he was sixteen years old, and put apprentice, as is said, to a linen-draper jr> London. This way of life, however, was so contrary to his natural thirst for knowledge and love of books, that he quitted it in a few years, and devoted himself entirely to literary pursuits. His studies were directed to philosophical objects, and the progress he made soon attracted the notice of some persons of eminence in the learned world. Amongst others he was honoured with the particular friendship of that distinguished scholar and physician Dr. Peter Barwick, who was so pleased with his ingenuity and industrious application, that he took him under his immediate tuition in his own family. Sir Henry Wotton was a man of eminent learning and
abilities, and greatly esteemed by his contemporaries. His
knowledge was very extensive, and his taste perhaps not inferior to that of any man of his time. Among other proofs
of it, he was among the first who were delighted with Milton’s mask of Comus; and although Mr. Warton has pronounced him to be “on the whole a mixed and desultory
character,
” he has found an able defender in a living author of equal taste and judgment, who observes on Mr.
Warton’s expression, that “this in a strict sense may be
true, but surely not in the way of censure. He mingled
the character of an active statesman with that of a recluse
scholar; and he wandered from the crooked and thorny
intrigues of diplomacy into the flowery paths of the muses.
But is it not high praise to have been thus desultory?

The same writer says of sir Henry as a poet, “It may be
true, that sir Henry’s genius was not suited to the
” higher
conceptions of Milton. His mind was subtle and elegant
rather than sublime. In truth the habits of a diplomatist,
and of a great poet, are altogether incompatible,“but
” for moral and didactic poetry, the experience of a statesman does not disqualify him," and of this species, sir
Henry has left some exquisite specimens. He seems to
have lived in a perpetual struggle between his curiosity
respecting the world, fomented by his ambition, and his
love of books, contemplation, and quiet. His letters to
sir Edmund Bacon, who married his niece, prove his strong
family affections. His heart appears to have been moulded
with a high degree of moral tenderness. This, both the
sentiments attributed to him by Walton, and the cast of
his poems, sufficiently evince.

from Denmark. His father, Francis, citizen and mercer
of London, was the only son of Cuthbert Wren, of Monkskirby.in Warwickshire, second son of William Wren of
Sberbume-honse and of Billy-hall in the bishopric of Durham: but the chief seat of the family was at Binchester in
that county. Our prelate was born in the parish of St. Petercheap, London, Dec. 23, 1585. Being a youth of promising talents, he was much noticed while at school by bishop
Andrews, who being chosen master of Pembroke-hall in
Cambridge, procured his admission into that society June
23, 1601, and assisted him in his studies afterwards, which
he pursued with such success as to be chosen Greek scholar, and when he had taken his batchelor’s degree was elected
fellow of the college Nov. 9, 1605. He commenced M.A.
in 1608, and having studied divinity was ordained deacon
in Jan. and priest in Feb. 1610. Being elected senior regent master in Oct, 1611, he kept the philosophy act with
great applause before king James in 1614, and the year following was appointed chaplain to bishop Andrews, and was
presented the same year to the rectory of Teversham in
Cambridgeshire. In 1621 he was made chaplain to prince
(afterwards king) Charles, whom he attended in that office
to Spain in 1623. After his return to England, he was
consulted by the bishops Andrews, Neile, and Laud, as to
what might be the prince’s sentiments towards the church
of England, according to any observations he had been able
to make. His answer was, “1 know my master’s learning
is not equal to his father’s, yet I know his judgment is very
right: and as for his affections in the particular you point
at (the support of the doctrine and discipline of the church)
I have more confidence of him than of his father, in whom
you have seen better than I so much inconstancy in some
particular cases.' 7 Neile and Laud examined him as to his
grounds for this opinion, which he gave them at large; and
after an hour’s discussion of the subject, Andrews, who had
hitherto been silent, said,
” Well, doctor, God send you

be a true prophet: I shall be in my grave, and so shall you,

seventeenth century, was the son of Richard Wright, citizen and silk-dyer of London, who was the son of Jeffrey
Wright, of Loughborough, in Leicestershire. He was born
in Black- Swan alley, Thames-street, in the parish of St.
James’s, Garlick Hythe, London, Dec. 23, 1611, and educated partly at Mercers’- chapel school, but principally at
Merchant Taylors, whence he was elected scholar of St.
JobnVcollege, Oxford, in 1629, by the interest of Dr.
Juxon, then president, w/ho became his patron. He was
much admired at this time for a natural eloquence, and a
love of polite literature. In 1632 he was elected fellow,
and while bachelor of arts, made a collection of modern
Latin poetry, which he published afterwards under the
title of “Delitiae delitiarum, siveepigrammatum ex optimis
quibusque hujus novissimi seculi Poetis in amplissima ilia
Bibl. Bodleiana, et pene omnino alibi extantibus artthologia
in unum corollum connexa,
” Ox. 1637, 12mo. In 1636,
when archbishop Laud entertained the royal family at St.
JohnVcollege, Mr. Wright was selected to make an English address, and afterwards distinguished himself as a
performer in a comedy called “Love’s Hospital,
” which
was acted before their majesties in the hall, by a company
of St. John’s men.
This posthumous work of his- was published soon after by his only son Samuel Wright, who was also a scholar of this college. He had formed many other useful designs, but
, a noted English mathematician,
who flourished in the latter part of the sixteenth century
and beginning of the seventeenth, is thus characterised in
a Latin paper in the library of Gonvile and Caius college,
Cambridge: “This year (1615) died at London, Edward
Wright, of Garveston, in Norfolk, formerly a fellow of
this college; a man respected by all for the integrity and
simplicity of his manners, and also famous for his skill in
the mathematical sciences; so that he was not undeservedly
styled a most excellent mathematician by Richard Hackluyt, the author of an original treatise of our English navigations. What knowledge he had acquired in the science
of mechanics, and how usefully he employed that knowledge to ths public as well as to private advantage, abundantly appear both from the writings he published, and
from the many mechanical operations still extant, which
are standing monuments of his great industry and ingenuity.
He was the first undertaker of that difficult but useful work,
by which a little river is brought from the town of Ware
in apew canal, to supply the city of London with water
but by the tricks of others he was hindered from completing the work he had begun. He was excellent both in
contrivance and execution, nor was he inferior to the most
ingenious mechanic in the making of instruments, either
of brass or any other matter. To his invention is owing
whatever advantage Hondius’s geographical charts have
above others; for it was Wright who taught Jodocus Horn
dius the method of constructing them, which wa.s till then
unknown; but the ungrateful Hondius concealed the name
of the true author, and arrogated the glory of the invention
to hjmself. Of this fraudulent practice the good man could
nqt help complaining, and justly enough, in the preface
to his treati.se of the
” Correction of Errors in the art of
Navigation;“which he composed with excellent judgment
and after long experience, to the great advancement of
naval affairsi For the improvement of this art he was appointed mathematical lecturer by the East India company,
and read lectures in the house of that worthy knight sir
Thomas Smith, for which he had a yearly salary of fifty
pounds, This office he discharged with great reputation,
and much to the satisfaction of his hearers. He published
in English a book on the doctrine of the sphere, and another
concerning the construction of sun-dials. He also prefixed an ingenious preface to the learned Gilbert’s book
on the loadstone. By these and other his writings, he has
transmitted his fame to latest posterity. While he was yet
a fellow of this college, he could not be concealed in his
private study, but was called forth to the public business
of the nation by the queen, about 1593. He was ordered
to attend the earl of Cumberland in some maritime expeditions. One of these he has given a faithful account of,
in the manner of a journal or ephemeris, to which he has
prefixed an elegant hydrographical chart of his own contrivance. A little before his death he employed himself
about an English translation of the book of logarithms, then
lately discovered by lord Napier, a Scotchman, who had a
great affection for him. This posthumous work of his- was
published soon after by his only son Samuel Wright, who
was also a scholar of this college. He had formed many
other useful designs, but was hindered by death from bringing them to perfection. Of him it may truly be said, that
he studied more to serve the public than himself; and
though he was rich in fame, and in the promises of the
great, yet he died poor, to tfie scandal of an ungrateful

the above Xenophon Socraticus, is the author of five books
“Of the loves of Habrocomes and Anthia,
” which are entitled “Ephesiaca,
” although they have no more to do with
the town of Ephesus than the “Ethiopics of Heliodorus,
”
which is a love-romance also, have with the affairs of Ethiopia. His late editor thinks that Xenophon lived about the
end of the second, or the beginning of the third century of
the Christian jera. It is at least very probable that he is
one of the most ancient of the Authores Erotici, from the
purity and simplicity of his style, in which there is little of
those affected ornaments so common in writers of a later
period. The only Mss. in which the history of Habrocomes and Anthia has been transmitted to posterity, is
preserved in the Benedictine abbey of Monte Cassino, at
Florence, and is written in so small a character, that the
whole work is comprised in no more than nine leaves, 4to.
The first person who copied it was Salvini, who likewise,
in 1723, translated this romance into the Italian language.
Of the Greek text itself, the first edition was prepared by
the celebrated physician Anthony Cocchi, and published
at London in 1726, 4to, although his late editor baron
Locellst asserts that London was put in the title instead of
Florence. But the fact was that it was printed at London
by Bowyer, as is proved in Mr. Nichols’s life of that celebrated printer. Two other editions, of 1781 and 1793, have
likewise appeared, but they are all incorrect. At length

, a German of great abilities and learning, was born at Augsburg in 1532, of very poor parents, and the love therefore of learning, which he discovered from his infancy, would have been fruitless if he had not met with a patron, in Wolfgang Relinger, a senator of Augsburg. This gentleman made him be supported at the public expence, till his progress in literature procured him admittance into the colleges, where the city maintained a certain number of students. In 1549 he was sent to the university of Tubingen, and afterwards to that of Basil, where he became an excellent Greek and Latin scholar. Melchior Adam affirms, that he took a master of arts degree at Basil in 1556; but Bayle is of opinion, that this date must be a mistake; for he thinks it improbable, that a man who had employed himself vigorously in study, and possessed such excellent natural talents, did not take that lower degree till his 24th year. Xylander certainly wrote his Latin version of Dion Cassius in 1557; at which time he was so good a scholar, that he employed but seven months in this work; for the truth of which he appeals to Mr. Herwat, a senator of Augsburg and his patron, to whom he dedicates it. Having given ample proof of his learning, and especially of his uncommon skill in the Greek tongue, he was invited in 1558 to Heidelberg, to take possession of the Greek professor’s chair, then vacant. In 1566, the elector-palatine Frederic III, and the duke of Wirtemberg, having called an assembly of the clergy to hold a conference upon the eucharist, about which there were great disputes, Xylander was chosen by the elector as secretary of the assembly, together with Osiander, who was named by the duke he executed the same office upon a similar occasion in 1581. Excessive application to study is supposed to have brought an illness upon him, of which he died in February 1576, aged forty-three years.

he desired to be omitted in the collection of his works

which he afterwards became. Yet he shewed a reverence
for religion, and considerable warmth in defending it. The
atheistical Tindal, who spent much of his time at All-Souls, used to say, “The Other boys I can always answer,
because I always know whence they have their arguments,
which I have read an hundred times, but that fellow Young
is continually pestering me with something of his own.

at Seaton, in Lothian, then the residence of his father, sir
Peter Young, knt. who, among other honourable offices,
had been assistant tutor, with the celebrated Buchanan, to
king James VI. At the age of fifteen Mr. Young was sent
to the university of St. Andrew’s, where having completed
the usual course of academical study, he received the degree of M. A. in 1603. Soon after he accompanied his
father to England, and being recommended to Dr. Lloyd,
bishop of Chester, the latter assisted him in the study of
divinity, as he was destined for the church. He continued
about a year with the bishop, and then went to Oxford,
and his merit having strongly recommended him to some
of the heads of houses, he was incorporated M. A. in July
1605. He then took deacon’s orders, and was chosen
chaplain of New college, which office he held for three
years, and during that time he employed himself chiefly in
the study of ecclesiastical history, and in cultivating the
Greek language, of which he at length acquired a profound
knowledge. Leaving Oxford, he went to London, where
his object seems to have been advancement at court, and
where his father, still living, had considerable interest.
The first patron he acquired was Montague, bishop of Bath
and Wells, by whose recommendation the king granted
him a pension of' 50l. Having succeeded thus far, his
next wish was to be appointed librarian to prince Henry,
who had a very fine collection of books, and a museum of
other curiosities; and although he failed in this, he succeeded in obtaining the care of the royal library newly
founded by the king, chiefly by the interest of his friend
and patron, bishop Montague. He had already drawn up
a catalogue of the books by the king’s express command,
and after he obtained the place he employed himself in
forming them into classes, as well as in making additions
by purchases which he recommended to the king,
particularly of Isaac Casaubon’s books. With the same view
he took journeys to Francfort, Holland, Paris, &c. In
the mean time his partiality to the Greek language induced
him to invite some of the natives of that country to England, and he contributed by himself or friends, to thenmaintenance and education here. Such was his zeal in
this species of learned patronage, that bishop Montague
used to call him the “patriarch of the Greeks.
” He also
cultivated the Latin language, which he wrote elegantly,
and assisted Mr. Thomas Rhead, or Read, in translating
king James’s works into that language. This volume appeared in 1619, and by his majesty’s special command Mr.
Young was sent with a presentation copy to Oxford and
Cambridge.
